HIRING RANGE :

$17.00 to $19.00 per hour, depending on experience.

About UFW Foundation: For 18 years, the UFW Foundation has mobilized farm workers and their organizations across the country to advocate for more equitable policies, such as immigration reform, pesticide protections, heat standards, hazard pay and other worker protections. We engage constituents in systemic change to break the cycle of poverty while also providing critical services. In fact, the UFW Foundation is the largest federally accredited immigration legal service provider in the state of California. The organization has staff in California, Arizona, Georgia, Illinois, and Michigan.

The UFW Foundation’s Immigration Legal Services Program provides high quality comprehensive affirmative and removal defense services and representation before U.S. Customs and Immigration Services (USCIS), Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR), and California State Courts. We represent low-income clients, including unaccompanied minors, in an array of affirmative and defensive applications, including but not limited to family petitions, U-visa/VAWA, Waivers, Naturalization and DACA, as well as Asylum/Withholding/CAT, Cancellation of Removal and Special Immigrants Juvenile Status (SIJS).

SUMMARY: The legal assistant will support attorneys or Department of Justice (DOJ) accredited representatives to enable (1) provision of affirmative immigration relief services; (2) assist in providing representation of clients in removal proceedings; (3) services and outreach at assigned community college campuses; and (4) work closely with other UFW Foundation programs to drive an organizing culture which influences systemic change. Legal Assistants report to lead staff attorney or senior accredited representative.

The responsibilities of the incumbent include, but are not limited to opening, routing, and responding to correspondence, answering the telephone and routing/taking messages, as well as providing high-level general clerical support to the lead manager and assigned supervisor. Secondary duties will include various special projects related to the events and activities in which the organization or lead manager is involved. This position will primarily assist in providing quality immigration legal services to farm workers seeking labor based deferred action.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: (This is not an exhaustive list)

Primary:

  • Utilize computer hardware and software to produce documents.
  • Read and routes incoming legal mail. Locates and attaches appropriate file to correspondence to be answered by DOJ Accredited Representative(s) or Attorney(s).
  • Compose and types routine and complex correspondence requiring ability to create merge documents and graphics.
  • Make copies of correspondence or other printed materials.
  • Prepare outgoing mail and correspondence, including e-mail and faxes.
  • Assist with the coordination of special events.
  • Facilitate completion of immigration applications (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, Citizenship, etc.)
  • Translate documents from Spanish to English and vice-versa.
  • Provide information to potential immigration applicants.
  • Provide necessary follow-up after intakes to evaluate client's eligibility for relief. Follow up includes performing legal research, obtaining additional information from client, etc.
  • Assist/coordinate and direct on-site/off-site group processing workshops.
  • Develop and disseminate programmatic materials.
  • Provide administrative and legal support to Attorney(s), DOJ Representatives, and other management staff.
  • Assist in maintaining accurate client database and case physical and/or electronic files
  • Conduct initial intake for Immigration clients.

Other, as needed:

  • Answer and screen telephone calls and arrange conference calls.
  • Coordinate DOJ Accredited Representative or Attorney and make appointments.
  • Assist other office staff with administrative needs.
  • Arrange and coordinate travel schedules and reservations for legal team members.
  • Organize and maintain file system, file correspondence and other records.
  • Greet all visitors/clients and assist them with questions and appointment needs.
  • Coordinate meetings, prepare agendas, reserve, and prepare facilities for meetings and record and transcribe minutes of meetings.
  • Coordinate office volunteers.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • May involve coordinating and supervising office volunteers.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS AND/OR QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Associate degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; and two years or more of related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Valid California Class C driver’s license, access to an automobile, insurance, and willingness to travel to off-site locations.
  • Requires the ability to type at a rate of not less than 50 Net Words Per Minute (NWPM).

The hourly pay range for this position is $17.00 to $19.00, and benefits include:
