Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Financial Aid, the Financial Aid Specialist performs professional administrative duties with the knowledge of Federal Financial Aid regulations and Financial Aid Office policies, procedures, and objectives.
Job Description:
  • Supports student application data and materials, tracks student academic progress, and prepares for workshop educational materials.
  • Performs verification of student application information; creates and disseminates verification-related communications to students/parents using processes designed in the database system or collaborates with University personnel to utilize other communication software as needed; tracks receipt of required documents; analyzes the accuracy of the information and notes inconsistencies in reported information; makes corrections to student application data and outbounds correction data to the central processor; sends regular follow up communications to secure incomplete information; and maintains database verification status.
  • Runs and interprets database queries regularly to analyze incoming and online applications; identifies missing and incomplete applications; identifies applications flagged for additional documentation and performs the necessary actions to effect communications with students to resolve needed documents; and collaborates with other FAO staff and/or University personnel to design and use communication software options available.
  • Collaborates with the Financial Aid Staff and Director to develop educational materials related to financial aid programs for workshops, presentations, and other venues; maintains ongoing knowledge of changes in financial aid programs and processes for incorporation into presentations and related materials; designs and implements assessment materials for use with presentations; and analyzes and reports on assessment outcomes.
  • Determines the types and amounts of financial aid to be awarded through the packaging process according to federal, state, and institutional requirements; monitors individual student awards; resolves data conflicts and over-awards; completes award packaging for undergraduate students according to institutional policy and assists with award packaging for non-need students
  • Provides individual student/parent counseling about financial aid opportunities and processes; regularly serves student customers in the office; and reads and responds to student/parent emails.
  • Arrange for and provide financial aid training to students via workshops during New Student Orientation and the semester in student housing or other venues.
  • Keeps abreast of all federal mandates, regulations, and updates related to the particular functions of this position and participates in online training opportunities, webinars, conferences, and other activities designed to provide continuing education in financial aid administration.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements annually.
  • Performs related and other duties as needed.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • A minimum of two years of professional experience with financial aid, accounting, or a related field.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

  • Experience working in a higher education setting.

  • Strong knowledge of federal regulations governing financial aid programs.
  • Demonstrated experience in the preparation of federal reports for financial aid.
