Job Summary

A Research Technician position is available in the Huen Lab. We study how metabolic adaptation promotes survival and tissue protection during sepsis. Sepsis is a significant cause of mortality among critically ill patients. Alterations in metabolism during sepsis are multifaceted and are incompletely understood as distinguishing the difference between protective and pathophysiologic responses is difficult. Our prior work showed that caloric supplementation, specifically glucose, during the period of anorexia, increased mortality in mouse models of bacterial inflammation. Our approach to identify the mechanisms by which fasting metabolism is protective in bacterial inflammation includes the investigation of various fasting metabolic pathways using mouse models.

Current projects in the lab include:

  • Determining the role of hepatic ketogenesis during sepsis and starvation adaptation.
  • Defining the role intra-renal ketogenesis and potential inter-cellular metabolite transfer.
  • Characterizing kidney cell-specific mitochondrial metabolism.
  • Understanding the role of lipid droplet formation in the kidney in response to fasting, inflammation, and ischemic injury

Duties will include:

  • Maintaining a mouse colony (handling, breeding and collecting tissue samples for genotyping as well as maintaining computer databases and records of mice)
  • Assisting in ongoing animal studies
  • Performing basic molecular biology techniques.
Experience and Education
  • Bachelor's degree with major coursework in field of assignment and no experience required OR
  • Two (2) years college with emphasis in coursework in field of assignment and two (2) years of laboratory experience at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent OR
  • High school graduation or GED and four (4) years laboratory experience to include two (2) years at level of Laboratory Technical Assistant or equivalent.
Job Duties
  • Performs routine scientific and medical research work in science area such as biology, chemistry, physics, or other related scientific field.
  • Assembles and/or operates various laboratory equipment and apparatus. Records research data in accordance with prescribed procedures, discussing results with supervisor.
  • Assists in collection of data for project reports.
  • Reads literature and confers with supervisor concerning implementation of new procedures.
  • May plan for, and provide working supervision to, work of laboratory personnel of lower grade engaged in limited phase of research project.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
