Middle School/Upper School Teacher - Social Emotional Learning (SEL)

The Shipley School seeks a qualified candidate for the position of Middle and Upper School Teacher - Social, Emotional and Ethical Development (SEED).

Major Responsibilities

• Teach Middle and Upper School SEL (Social Emotional & Ethical Development =SEED) classes
• Serve as an advisor in either Middle or Upper School
• Be an active participant in the school's co-curricular program in meaningful ways by coaching, running a club, chaperoning overnight trips, etc.
• Other responsibilities include attending regular faculty meetings, professional learning communities, in-service days, and other supervision duties as assigned

Qualifications

The successful candidate must:

• Have training and experience in teaching and counseling, social work, psychology or related field;
• Have an interest in ongoing professional development and learning around Human Flourishing, Well-Being, and teaching typical "health" topics, such as sexuality education, drug/alcohol prevention, and mental health/mental disorders;
• Have a passion for cultural competency and a commitment to bringing topics and practices related to social justice, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to the classroom.

The ideal candidate will possess the following:

• Have experience teaching a social/emotional curriculum to adolescents;
• Have an interest in and a desire to build and evaluate curriculum;
• Have training in Human Flourishing, Positive Education/Positive Psychology;
• Have training or experience in sexuality education.

The Shipley School, founded in 1894, is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school currently enrolling 835 students in grades Pre-K through 12. Located in the western suburbs of Philadelphia, the school is committed to educational excellence and dedicated to developing in each student a love of learning and compassionate participation in the world. The Middle School has 195 students in grades 6-8, and a faculty of 30.
