HJF is seeking a Military Behavioral Health Psychologist to provide oversight and foster collaboration of research projects in partnership with the Defense Intrepid Network. The incumbent will provide support to the identified research projects focused on the enhancement of creative arts therapies as well as serve as a subject matter expert for more general behavioral health training and education products. This position will be in support of the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences’ Center for Deployment Psychology (CDP), which is based in Rockville, MD. Applicants must possess the ability to provide behavioral subject matter expertise that is culturally sensitive in a manner that is accessible and inclusive which demonstrates a comprehensive understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion.

The Military Behavioral Health Psychologist assists with activities related to CDP’s mission, which is to lead the development of a community of culturally mindful and clinically competent providers through the delivery of high-quality training and education, the convening of experts, and the dissemination of research-based treatment and the latest topics in military behavioral health. The Henry M. Jackson Foundation (HJF) provides administrative and management support to the Center. CDP strives to be the central hub for the Military Health System (MHS) in the development and implementation of training and education to clinicians in order to ensure that all service members, veterans, and their families receive quality behavioral healthcare that meets their unique needs.

Note: This work site requires that Non-US Citizen incumbents have lived in the US three out of the past five years.

Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight and fosters collaboration for creative arts related research projects. Each project will be conducted under a primary investigator (PI) who will have responsibility for running their study and managing their own budget.
  • Collaborates with the various PIs to provide managerial support to the projects to include organizing and leading meetings and tracking compliance with required reporting requirements such as reviewing, collating, and preparing reports for funding stakeholders. 
  • Serves as the POC for scientific questions and liaisons with PIs about mental health and creative arts therapies for service members and veterans. Problem solves research-related issues and maintains effective and timely communication with scientific collaborators and in such, demonstrates strong interpersonal, communication, and conflict resolution skills.
  • Develops and delivers workshops on military culture and military/deployment related behavioral health issues to include multi-day, evidenced-based psychotherapy workshops. Expertise in this subject matter includes the ability to integrate the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences, such that the candidate is able to provide training and consultation that is empirically sound as well as culturally competent, inclusive and accessible across a wide variety of contexts.
  • Works with a team of subject matter experts and staff to coordinate training schedules and to develop new training materials and support resources based on a variety of content areas (e.g., clinical health, suicide prevention, military families, etc.) and program evaluation feedback.
  • Contributes to CDP’s subject matter expert blog posts, podcasts, videos, infographics, asynchronous training materials, and other additional educational activities as needed. Prepares scholarly manuscripts for publication and presents at national and/or international conferences to disseminate the work conducted by the Center.
  • May perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned or directed by the supervisor. This may include attendance of and participation in required training for the role.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • The incumbent must have graduate level training and extensive post degree experience in treating adult populations and must be licensed. Knowledge of the research literature relevant to military deployment, military culture, telehealth, other aspects of military life and implementation science is preferred. 
  • Experience conducting or managing clinical research is preferred. 
  • The ability to integrate the best available research with clinical expertise in the context of patient characteristics, culture, and preferences, such that the individual is able to provide input, training and consultation that is empirically sound as well as culturally competent, inclusive and accessible across a wide variety of contexts.
  • Ability to diagnose and treat psychological problems of all complexities; familiarity with aspects of military-specific and relevant DoD psychological health policies is preferred.
  • Excellent communication skills including writing appropriate reports, articles, white papers, and providing presentations to large audiences.
  • Ability to troubleshoot technical procedures.
  • Ability to work independently and supervise others.

Physical Capabilities 

  • Lifting: Requires lifting materials up to 25 lbs.
  • Ability to stand or sit at a computer for prolonged periods.

  • This position will take place primarily in an office setting. 

Education and Experience

  • Doctoral degree required.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years’ experience required.

Compensation

The likely salary range for this position is $88,600 USD to $115,000 USD annually based on a 40-hour work week. This is not, however, a guarantee of compensations or salary. Final salary will be determined based on market analysis, experience, and education.

Some positions or sites may require that the incumbent be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Proof of vaccination may be required.
