PREVENTION & WELLNESS COUNSELOR
POSITION DESCRIPTION
The Prevention and Wellness Counselor will work in conjunction with the administration, school therapists, school counselors and others as directed to ensure prevention and mental wellness supports are in place and are accessible to the district wellness team. The Prevention & Wellness Counselor will develop clear systems to promote and sustain exceptional academic achievement for all students, while assisting with the many issues that students may face during their educational experience. The Prevention & Wellness Counselor will enhance data collection and analysis surrounding student mental wellness needs. The Prevention & Wellness Counselor will assist others in ensuring student learning by creating and communicating positive mental wellness strategies all students.
QUALIFICATIONS
1. Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree preferred, a minimum of five (5) years’ experience in education and/or clinical health settings.
2. Passion for ensuring that all students have access to high quality educational opportunities.
3. Ability to originate and implement new ideas, but also recognizes and provides support to implement innovative ideas generated by other people.
4. Thorough understanding of the needs of diverse learners.
5. Understands when to involve others for more complex issues and/or concerns by keeping the appropriate parties informed.
6. Capability to effectively develop and maintain strong relationships with school leaders, staff, teachers, parents, students, and community stakeholders.
7. Ability to self-direct and prioritize among competing goals, exhibit flexibility, and drive results in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment.
8. Excellent written, verbal communication, and presentation skills with keen attention to detail.
9. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable an individual with a disability to perform the essential responsibilities.
10. Valid Ohio School Counselor License through the Ohio Department of Education.
ESSENTIAL PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Will lead activities to affirmatively address the mental wellness and social / emotional development of students through early identification, intervention, and coordination with other personnel including but not limited to School Counselors, School Psychologists, and Administrators and outside intervention services.
2. Will compile and maintain a current list of family wellness resources for use by all stakeholders.
3. Will collaborate with various stakeholders to ensure programming is reflective of the varying needs and demographics of Mason students. This includes collaborating with outside service providers to ensure that services are integrated into the school.
4. Will reintegrate students and provide continual supports for students who were receiving mental health supports from a partial hospitalization or other alternate placement.
5. Will serve as needed, on the district wellness team.
6. Will work to provide a full circle perspective of district efforts by being alert to student and family situations, finding intervention solutions with district and other agency resources to support the student and family.
7. Will establish and maintain procedures for remaining aware of student suspensions and expulsion events that may require coordination of interventions to reduce the opportunity for aggressive acts against the school.
8. Will serve as an emergency resource for students to meet with when the situation arises to determine next steps for referrals.
9. Will collaborate with school administration, school counselors, and school psychologists to ensure that the appropriate level of supports are in place for any student who presents a need; this includes participation on some problem solving, 504, and IEP teams.
10. Sustain partnerships and work with various outside agencies including but not limited to the following: Warren County Family and Children First, Coordinated Care (Warren County Educational Services Center), Beech Acres, Lindner Center, Solutions, Children’s Hospital, etc.
11. Will stay abreast of ongoing changes to mental health and bring strategies to the table for combatting and/or addressing these issues.
12. Will attend counselor meetings as needed.
13. Attend meetings as directed by administration.
14. All other duties as assigned.
