The Field Training Officer is primarily responsible for all department security training (new hire, recurring, etc.) as well as providing security training for non-security staff. As a member of the Security Department Leadership Team, this position assists in identifying future department goals in support of Library Strategic initiatives. This position provides administrative support to other library staff via background checks, issuing alarm code authorization numbers, and tracking branch Security Officer Daily Activity Reports. The role offers opportunities to demonstrate fiscal responsibility and manages all department uniform and equipment purchasing. It also assists in maintaining a safe and secure environment for library customers and staff.

  • Knowledge of loss prevention, theft and search procedures.
  • Knowledge of laws and City ordinances pertaining to theft, disturbances, assault and vandalism as well as privacy of user records.
  • Knowledge of security equipment and dispatch center.
  • Knowledge of internal DPL policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of security and life/safety systems and programming.
  • Skill in de-escalation and positive communication.
  • Skill in handling disruptive people and handling disruptive situations in a discreet and unobtrusive manner.
  • Skill in exercising quick, mature and informed judgment in reacting effectively to emergency situations.
  • Skill in the documentation of incidents.
  • Skill in reviewing and maintaining records. Able to effectively schedule, plan and execute training procedures.
  • Ability to professionally and effectively communicate with trainees and professionally develop others into productive Library Security Officers.
  • Ability to exercise quick and mature judgment in dealing with potentially disruptive, physically dangerous or abusive customers and emergencies.
  • Ability to complete concise and grammatically correct reports.
  • Ability to work with a diverse group of people in a fast-paced work environment.
  • Ability to use basic workplace technology including email, internet and automated software.
  • Ability to pass a physical examination and a background check after the offer to hire has been made.
  • Ability to obtain an Unarmed Business Guard License issued by the City/County of Denver.

  • Three years of civilian or military experience in security, safety, loss prevention or law enforcement (related academic training, public relations skills or customer service experience may be considered as a substitute for direct security requirement).
  • A high school diploma or equivalency.
  • A current Colorado driver's license with a good driving record.
Other things to know:This position may be based at the Central Library, which only has pay to park options, but regular employees are eligible for an ECO Pass that provides access to RTD transit.
