Summary of Position:

The Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Temple Faculty Physicians (TFP) and Senior Vice President of Temple Physician Enterprise is a senior physician executive on the academic practice plan leadership team. In collaboration with Temple University Health System (TUHS), the CMO provides clinical and strategic oversight of essential practice functions. The CMO will be a crucial leader in an interdisciplinary effort to reach and sustain the organization's goals.

The ideal candidate will be an accomplished physician executive who will work effectively with other executive management team members. The CMO has a proven track record of success in leading and managing clinical operations, improving quality of care, and achieving financial goals in an academic teaching environment. The CMO will have a passion for the academic medical group mission and a commitment to advancing healthcare through education, research, and clinical excellence. They will be fully prepared by experience and training to collaboratively establish ambitious goals and support all involved in a comprehensive effort to achieve them.

As the organization pursues its mission of driving quality and performance excellence, the CMO and Senior Vice President of the Temple Physician Enterprise will lead many critical initiatives.

Partner with clinical teams to identify areas for process improvement based on data analysis, patient feedback, and staff input in areas such as:

  • Streamlining referral pathways: Identifying bottlenecks and inefficiencies in patient referrals between primary care and specialists.
  • Optimizing care transitions: Improving coordination between hospital discharge and outpatient follow-up to improve continuity of care.

Lead the development and implementation of interventions to address identified process inefficiencies, including:

  • Standardizing clinical protocols: Developing evidence-based care pathways for common conditions to improve consistency and quality of care.
  • Implementing technology solutions: Utilizing electronic health records (EHRs) for automated reminders, clinical decision support tools, and secure communication channels to streamline workflows.
  • Piloting and evaluating interventions: Testing and refining process improvement initiatives on a smaller scale before broader implementation to ensure effectiveness and sustainability.

Foster a culture of continuous process improvement within the organization by:

  • Empowering faculty to frontline staff: Encouraging staff to identify and propose solutions to process inefficiencies.
  • Organizing a team to provide training and resources: Offering training on process improvement methodologies and tools to equip staff with the necessary skills.
  • Measuring and communicating results: Tracking the impact of process improvement initiatives and sharing results with stakeholders to maintain momentum and demonstrate the value of continuous improvement efforts.

Provide clinical leadership in the following ways:

  • Develop and implement clinical strategies that align with the organization's mission and vision, including initiatives to improve patient outcomes, reduce costs, and enhance access to care.
  • Lead and mentor faculty physicians, fostering a culture of continuous learning and improvement.
  • Strategic Leadership: Partner with the CEO and senior leadership team to develop and implement the organization's strategic plan.

Spearhead Ambulatory-Sensitive Quality Initiatives serving the unique needs of outpatient settings, including:

  • Partner with Population Health on Chronic Disease Management: Implementing programs for chronic conditions and preventive care utilization.
  • Execute an ambulatory-wide quality infrastructure, reporting system design, and closed-loop evaluations of issues.
  • Standardized clinical pathways: Implementing evidence-based care protocols for common conditions to improve quality and consistency of care while enhancing efficiency.

Educational Requirements and Minimum Qualifications

  • MD or DO degree from an accredited medical school.
  • Board certification in a relevant clinical specialty.
  • Master's degree in business administration, healthcare administration, or a related field (preferred).
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in a senior leadership role within a healthcare organization, preferably an academic medical center or group practice.
  • Proven track record of success in leading and managing clinical operations, improving quality of care, and achieving financial goals.
  • Demonstrated commitment to academic excellence and research.
  • In possession of/eligible for an unrestricted medical license in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Annual compensation shall be determined based on the experience and qualifications of the selected individual. Temple Faculty Physicians (TFP)

Temple Faculty Physicians comprises more than 500 dually employed physicians who are the cornerstone of clinical care and teaching for Temples healthcare enterprise. These physicians practice in 20 academic departments encompassing every subspecialty in modern medicine.

While remaining committed to serving patients in the North Philadelphia community, Temple Faculty Physicians has expanded its geographic reach beyond Temple University Hospitals Health Sciences campus in recent years. Today, Temple physicians care for patients in several Temple-affiliated hospitals, in satellite offices in Center City Philadelphia, Fort Washington, PA, Oaks, PA and various other outpatient settings. This expanded reach has brought Temple medical care closer to home for many patients.

Lewis Katz School of Medicine and Temple Health

The Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University is dedicated to excellence in education, research, and patient care, achieved by faculty, staff, and learners who represent and serve its diverse society.

In 2015, the Temple University School of Medicine was renamed the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University in honor of Temple alumnus, former trustee, and philanthropist Lewis Katz. The school enjoys a national reputation for training humanistic clinicians and biomedical scientists- a school that values technical excellence and cultural competence through diversity, equity, and inclusion. LKSOM enrolls 220 medical students, 22 graduate students in the biomedical sciences, 35 physician assistant students, and 40 post-baccalaureate students per year.

Katz School of Medicine has 27 basic science and clinical departments, consisting of over 900 full- and part-time faculty, 900 volunteer faculty, and more than 500 additional staff.

With more than 13,000 alumni, LKSOM has trained a significant proportion of the physician base in the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Delaware region.
