Design Engineer II - Electrical

Judd Wire Inc., a Sumitomo Electric Group company, is looking for a Design Engineer II - Electrical in our Turners Falls, MA office. This person will be responsible for Product Design and Development, with an emphasis on high-speed data cables for the Aerospace, Automotive, and Rail/Mass Transit industries. The candidate will also support other product design and development responsibilities within the department, including development and maintenance of product specifications, manufacturing instructions, and bills of material. Work cross-functionally within the company and with customers to identify problems and implement solutions associated with product performance, design, or materials.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

• Design and develop high speed data cables in support of new business development opportunities as well as improve existing products to achieve better performance or reduce costs. Understand relevant agency, industry, and customer specifications and existing products to inform development decisions.
• Identify new applications for existing and newly developing products. Develop product specifications for new applications. Participate in customer meetings as a Judd technical representative. Provide feedback and recommendation for solutions based on company and product capability.
• Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality concerning product design and testing. Identify appropriate test equipment and procedures to demonstrate product performance. Provide application support through Sales to answer customer inquiries. Interact with other technical teams in global Sumitomo Electric Industries corporation as subject matter expert to coordinate project efforts. Write technical reports for customers when needed.
• Create internal specifications and bills of material for materials and products for production. Write PFMEAs, Control Plans, and Process flow diagrams as needed for new products. Establish proficiency with internal company systems used to manage products, product information, manufacturing instructions, costs, and work requests.
• Introduce new product designs to manufacturing. Lead Design Review meetings with a cross-functional team including QA, Manufacturing, Engineering, Purchasing, and Sales. Identify problems with product design and manufacturing with team and implement solutions for successful product launch.
• Assist with tasks and/or projects delegated from the department Manager and/or Team Leader. Perform other similar duties as responsibilities necessitate, or as assigned by supervisor. Assign supporting tasks to technicians as appropriate and in coordination with Engineering team.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, or degree in other Engineering field with applicable coursework or experience.
• 1 to 3 years of experience in the wire and cable industry or related field.
• Knowledge in transmission line theory, testing, and analysis of results for high speed data cables, and demonstrated ability to associate test results with the details of the materials and construction of the cable under test.
• Effective technical writing skills for internal and external customers
• Ability to work within or lead cross-functional teams to solve engineering problems.

Desired Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s or advanced degree in Electrical Engineering.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in the wire and cable industry or related field.
• Demonstrated experience in the product design and development of cables for high speed signal applications, including Ethernet, USB, LVDS, and similar cables.
• Knowledge in Aerospace, Automotive, specifications, standards and product testing protocols for data cables.
