Job Responsibilities

At Lexington Maintenance, diagnoses and makes repairs to automotive vehicles and equipment, remove manifold system, distributor system and hoses before removing engine from vehicle. Tears engine down and rebuild the same. Repairs or replace valve trains, cylinder heads, injectors, timing belt or chains, and distributors. Repairs or replaces starters, alternators, carburetors, and pumps. Use computerized testing machines to diagnose ignition system and use analyzer to trace ignition patterns and solve problems. Repairs power brakes, wheel cylinders, master cylinders, and power steering units. Replaces ball joints and other elements of the steering unit. Installs exhaust systems and makes repairs on catalytic converters. Makes repairs to hydraulics and electrical systems on mowing tractors to include combination and slope mowers. Welds and replaces structural components on decks and booms. Assists other mechanics and/or trains them in areas where they need assistance. Directs the work of other mechanics and acts as a supervisor in the absence of the shop foreman. Includes completing time sheets, supervising operation of parts room, ensuring shop work is completed in a timely manner, and managing the equipment flow in and out of the shop. Enters daily work reports into HMMS (Highway Maintenance Management System) accurately. Repairs and upgrades vehicles and equipment by welding parts or making new parts as needed. Makes service calls on the road and diagnose problems at scene. Make necessary repairs. Works with Fleet Management to ensure timely repair of vehicles. Contacts vendors on regular basis to ensure vendor repair is completed in a timely manner. Works as required during inclement weather/emergencies. May be required to work extended shifts.
Minimum and Additional Requirements

Two (2) years of work experience that involved the independent performance of job duties directly related to the area of employment, or an approved acceptable equivalence. Completion of one (1) academic year of a South Carolina High School Automotive Technology or Diesel Engine curriculum may substitute for six (6) months of directly related experience. Necessary Special Requirement: A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required upon entry to the position. Requires attainment of a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) within
six (6) months of placement in the position.
The physical demands for the essential functions of this position involve bending, stooping, reaching, twisting, climbing, balancing, kneeling, pushing, pulling, grasping and physically manipulating objects of varying size, shape, weight, and material. Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. This position requires working in a large garage setting and may perform duties in an uncomfortable position for long periods of time. May be required to work outside of normal work schedule, especially during inclement weather and/or other departmental-related emergencies. Frequently exposed to outside environment in all weather conditions, noise, and oil or grease on a daily basis.
