Description of Duties:

The Summer Accelerator program is a unique academic experience that allows curious students to learn about subject matter that is interesting to them in a residential setting with like-minded peers. The program has been serving rising 5th - 12th-grade students on NCSSM’s Durham campus since 2015 and expanded to NCSSM Morganton in 2022.

The Assistant Director of Summer Programs position will plan, support and manage alongside NCSSM Summer Programs team various summer and year-round programming. This position primarily focuses on the recruitment and enrollment of students, communication with families, hiring seasonal staff, program planning, and coordinating with the other necessary staff/departments at NCSSM-Durham. The Assistant Director of Summer Programs supports the program and institutional goals and mission by administering, improving, and expanding high-quality summer programs for K-12 students. They will help plan in coordination with the Summer Accelerator - Morganton Team with the best interest of NCSSM and the program in mind.

General responsibilities include:

  • Program planning and management: Serves as programming expert regarding program operations, student life, and best practices. With the rest of the Summer Programs team, plans program schedules and makes decisions regarding program offerings. Reviews program evaluation data and implements program improvements, with specific focus on recruitment and enrollment.

  • Logistics coordination: collaborate with NCSSM-Durham and NCSSM-Morganton staff to plan and coordinate events, housing, food service, campus support, supplies, etc.

  • Communications and marketing: Primary lead on student recruitment and engagement. Plans and implements marketing strategy, represents NCSSM at events and conferences, manages social media pages, maintains website, designs and sends email blasts, designs promotional flyers.

  • Admissions, recruitment, and customer service: Takes the lead on all issues of recruiting and enrolling students for all summer program sites. Serves as first point of contact for prospective families, manages applications and enrollment, recruits and leads selection teams, and tracks payments.

  • Site supervision: serve as on-call supervisor while programs are in session, and manage emergencies; supervise and lead student activities as needed, including driving NCSSM vehicles to off-campus trips. Valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions is required. .

Specific duties include:

  • Manage admissions and enrollment process for NCSSM summer programs

  • Provide customer service, information, and reminders to families leading up to and throughout programs

  • Create new marketing efforts to target new student groups being served and to promote new program models and locations, specifically focusing on new marketing for younger students and families interested in day programming.

  • Plan and implement marketing strategy, research events, and coordinate attendance at STEM competitions, conferences, schools, and camp fairs; plan and order swag, marketing materials, and promotional items.

  • Oversee some in-session programming and make independent decisions regarding safety, discipline, staffing, activities, and resources; manage emergency situations;

  • Ensure safety of programs and make independent decisions about feasibility and budgeting.

  • Other general NCSSM duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Professional Knowledge: Knowledge of program policies, procedures, technology, best practices and their theoretical bases. Ability to interpret and apply a variety of interrelated policies, procedures, and programs. Knowledge of new theories, trends, laws or precedents demonstrated by recommending and implementing improvements or necessary changes to policies, procedures and/or program(s).

  • Program/Project Administration: Ability to administer and/or manage a program with established guidelines and standards.Ability to ensure program/project accountability. Ability to define scope, goals, tasks, deliverables, timelines, tools, and resources. Ability to assess the needs of the work unit or project. Ability to perform professional program administrative duties, including technical decisions.

  • Consultation: Ability to advise and collaborate with clients, program participants, and others to resolve difficult issues in assigned program area(s). Ability to recognize the impact of policies, procedures, and laws. Ability to apply knowledge and understanding of program culture, issues, and work relationships to address situations.

  • Information Analysis and Decision-Making: Ability to analyze business operations and/or financial statements for overall program administration. Ability to develop initiatives to meet program/project needs and objectives.Ability to resolve problems or compliance issues, based on delegated authority.

  • Communication and Marketing: Ability to maintain and enhance professional relationships to increase credibility for building support and reaching consensus when explaining and interpreting program policies and procedures within assigned area(s). Ability to convey sensitive information or decisions to clients.

  • Leadership: Ability to develop and manage a program/project plan. Ability to supervise staff. Ability to develop and implement short-term strategies consistent with program goals.

Minimum Education and Experience:

Bachelor’s degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Valid driver’s license with no serious driving-related convictions.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher

  • Experience working in youth programming, education, or recreation programming

  • Leadership experience in a youth residential camp setting

  • Ability to interact positively and professionally with a wide range of stakeholders (young students, parents, faculty, administration, etc.)

  • Experience supervising and hiring a team of staff

  • Ability to travel within the state of North Carolina

  • Highly motivated and proven ability to problem solve

  • Proven written and oral communication skills

  • Pediatric and adult First Aid and CPR Certification or willingness to obtain certification

  • Experience with Google Suite, Zoom, and registration management software

  • Strong attention to detail
