*This is the earning potential over the course of eight steps. New hires will generally start at Step 1. Annual step increases are based on performance reviews and financial authorization.
The Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Air Quality, Division of Licensing and Compliance, announces an Environmental Specialist III vacancy in Presque Isle.
BRIEF JOB DESCRIPTION: This position is primarily responsible for working with a variety of industrial, commercial, and institutional facilities throughout the northern Maine region to ensure compliance with state and federal air emission standards and requirements. Tasks include:
  • Compliance inspections.
  • Complaint investigation and resolution.
  • Evaluating pollution control methods for emission units and processes.
  • Data entry and maintaining databases.
  • Site visits to licensed and unlicensed sources.
  • Compliance assistance activities.
  • Writing, reviewing, and analyzing technical reports, and other related tasks.
In addition to these duties, the person in this position will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the northern Maine ambient air monitoring network. Some specific tasks include:
  • Operating, maintaining, calibrating, auditing, troubleshooting, and repairing of equipment.
  • Performing data reviews and quality assurance assessments.
  • Submitting data to EPA's air quality database.
  • Routine maintenance of monitoring sites.
The position interfaces with a variety of facilities and their consultants, Department-wide staff, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the general public, and other interested parties. Travel and overnights may be required on occasion.
This position will have hybrid work schedule capabilities with prior approval from a managing authority.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: A six (6) year combination of education and/or experience in environmental, biological, physical science, or engineering which includes two (2) years of environmental experience. Qualifying education must include at least 15 credit hours of science or engineering coursework from an accredited educational institution.
Preference will be given to candidates with the following skills and/or experience:
  • Knowledge of state and federal air pollution regulations.
  • Knowledge of air pollution, the sources that generate it, and methods used to monitor and control.
  • Conducting compliance inspections.
  • Identifying and analyzing issues, reaching logical conclusions, and making sound recommendations/decisions.
  • Database management and other computer skills.
  • Effectively communicating technical information verbally and in writing.
  • Strong customer service and compliant resolution skills.
