Department Information

The Operations and Advancement team oversees a strategic selection of campus enterprises and responsibilities, including Facilities Management and the campus physical plant and construction, Auxiliary Services, Hispanic Serving Institution Initiatives, Alumni Relations, Marketing, Communications, and Community Relations, and the Denver-based Advancement team. This diverse portfolio allows our teams to imagine long-term partnerships; support a campus master planning initiative; establish new fundraising opportunities as long-term, drivers for new and evolving academic and student experiences; developing meaningful relationship and pipelines with our alumni graduates; and message and share CSU Pueblo's statewide engagement and impact to stakeholders in Denver and beyond. Our team's objective is to build and strengthen CSU Pueblo's ten initiatives of Vision 2028, and support the campus ecosystem, as we work toward achieving the three wildly important goals of the university: elevating the appeal of campus, enhancing student success, and developing our people.

Description of Job

The MCCR Staff Writer position focuses on enhancing written content for CSU Pueblo, producing stories for internal and external publication, op-eds, web content, newsletter content, blogs, press releases, speeches, special reports, talking points, video scripts, social media captions and written content, and long-form magazine stories. This position requires an experienced writer and researcher with skill in data analysis and core message development. This position reports to the Director of Marketing/PIO.
Primary Duties
  • Create written content that advances the goals and initiatives of CSU Pueblo.
  • Manage own time and project schedules to ensure timely completion of all projects and assignments.
  • Ensure content is accurate, polished, professional, and grammatically correct prior to publication.
  • Conduct interviews, research, and data collection to support robust content for CSU Pueblo platforms.
  • Recommend story/project ideas to pursue that align with the objectives of CSU Pueblo as well as accepting assignments from the Director of MCCR/PIO.
  • Manage production schedules and deadlines to ensure consistent and timely project delivery.
  • Recommend and develop opportunities for repurposing and leveraging content across other platforms for a variety of audiences and intents.
  • Serve as a lead written content-generator for CSU Pueblo, developing in-depth articles, stories, media pitches, video scripts, and web content that showcases CSU Pueblo faculty, staff, students, and alumni.
  • Recommend strategic direction and messaging for various communications projects.
  • Maintain communications with coworkers in tracking jobs, archives, and finished products.
  • Enhance knowledge by participating in opportunities, reading professional publications, maintaining personal networks, participating in professional organizations, and gathering and analyzing competitive material.
  • Demonstrate, through words and actions, a commitment to cultural competency and inclusion to develop successful relationships with various teams across campus.
  • Create and maintain a database of faculty and staff content experts that can be utilized and showcased in written content and media interviews.
  • Create content for CSU Pueblo news website and work with Social and Digital Content Coordinator to publish content and obtain photos and visuals to accompany stories to showcase on digital platforms.
  • Serve as backup to PIO for media relations when necessary.
  • Additional responsibilities as assigned.
Ancillary Duties
Represent MCCR (or Operations and Advancement) at university meetings, on committees, or in support of university operations or advancement

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, in journalism, public relations, marketing, communications, or related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of full-time professional experience writing for publication and established track record of publication in high-quality publications.
  • Active engagement and support of diverse individuals, opinions, and perspectives.
  • Media relations experience, including pitching story ideas and working with reporters on deadline.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Masters degree in journalism, communications, or related field.
  • Bilingual/Spanish
  • Experience writing for and with higher education leadership.
  • Experience in still photography.
  • Experience in daily journalism and/or magazine writing.
