Description of Job
About the Work Unit
At the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), the Survey/Right of Way (ROW) Plans unit collects, compiles, and analyzes information from all available sources to develop the best possible ROW corridor for public highways. The plans also provide the basis for eminent domain appraisal and acquisition. This unit is responsible for archiving and filing for deposit with property authority all ROW plans, land descriptions, and information. It acts as guardian and source of CDOT records and project information for the public, local agencies, and internal ROW-related inquiries. This unit performs many other survey, ROW plans and property management functions, including setting and maintaining control monuments, setting monuments marking the boundary of CDOT ROW, responding to requests from customers for ROW plans and survey information, and maintaining the Region's vast ROW plans and survey control database.
About the Position
CDOT has a vacancy for a Professional Land Surveyor Supervisor (Professional Land Surveyor II) in our Denver Metro location which provides both surveying and ROW plan preparation services.
Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:
  • Develop the unit's budget requests, allocates resources, schedules survey and ROW plan preparation assignments, and oversees the unit's operations.
  • Select and oversee consultant surveyors, ensuring quality assurance and quality control for the outsourced surveying/ROW plans preparation services.
  • Provide survey and ROW expertise and guidance to local public agencies and CDOT staff.
  • Coordinate with various disciplines on issues relating to planning, environmental, survey, appraisal, design, property management, access, and legislation.
  • Ensure local public agencies perform all surveys and prepare all ROW plans and legal descriptions in compliance with state and federal statutes, regulations and guidelines.
  • Responsible for performance planning and evaluation, coaching employees, and approving timesheets and leave requests.
  • Other job duties as assigned.
Work Environment:
  • Primarily 8:00 am - 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday, Flex schedule permitted.
  • Opportunity to work from home 1-3 days a week
  • Approximately 10% spent in the field, 90% spent in the office.
  • Travel required during work hours throughout Metro Denver/Front Range
  • Occasional overnight travel 1-3 times a year throughout Colorado
  • Required to operate CDOT vehicles.
  • Field work may be conducted in various weather conditions near high-speed traffic.
Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

  • Current, valid licensure as a Professional Land Surveyor from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.
  • AND at least one year of experience as a licensed Professional Land Surveyor.

  • Knowledge of the CDOT Survey Manual and CDOT ROW Manual.
