JOB TITLE: Medical Assistant DEPARTMENT: St. Luke’s Physician Group, Medical Oncology REPORTS: Practice Administrator, Medical Oncology JOB SUMMARY Performs general medical assisting functions. Ascertains and records patient’s vital signs, height, and weight. Prepares and sorts through medical documents prior to patient office visit. Assists with minor procedures and bone marrow biopsies. Works closely with the nurse, APC and physician to ensure that the highest level of safety and most precise detail is given to patient care. TEAMS downloaded to employees phone required for schedule updates. Travel between sites may be requested for coverage needs. Vaccination requirements apply. WORK PERFORMED JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Attends departmental meetings -Actively participates as a team member in resolution of problems as they are identified -Analyzes current procedures, bringing suggestions for improvement to the attention of team members and supervisor consideration. Works in conjunction with the Medical Oncologist and Registered Nurse to provide the highest level of care to the patients. Ascertains and records patient’s height, weight, blood pressure, pulse, respiration and temperature in to electronic medical record. Performs medication and allergy reconciliation in the electronic medical record appropriately at each patient visit. Ascertains patient’s chief complaints and describes same in note accurately and succinctly. Assists in scanning and filing documents into patient charts in the electronic medical record. Keeps patient charts up to date by scanning in the appropriate medical documents that have been approved by the doctor on a daily basis. Opens and begins note in electronic medical record for physician for each patient visit. Keeps exam rooms clean, stocked, and in order. Disposes of Bio-Hazardous waste and regular waste. Answers telephone within three rings, prioritize calls, and tasks messages accordingly in electronic medical record. Serves as a consistent contact for the patient/family throughout the process of diagnosis and treatment. Assists with patient education re: diet, medications, etc. Works with physician, nurse practitioner, and/or physician assistant as directed. Assists in capturing accurate patient demographic information. Proficient in electronic medical record program used in office. Utilizes computer system to schedule appointments. Actively participates in all quality improvement programs. Maintains detailed knowledge of computer software systems as it relates to job functions. Responds to written and telephone inquiries from patients, insurance carriers and facilities regarding planned services. Actively participates in maintaining and/or improving quality improvement initiatives regarding patient satisfaction survey. Takes an active role in facilitation team approach to functions within the department: Maintains confidentiality of all materials handled within the Network/ Entity as well as the proper release of information. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding issues of employee, patient and environmental safety and follows appropriate reporting requirements. Demonstrates/models the Network’s Service Excellence Standards of Performance in interactions with all customers (internal and external). Demonstrates Performance Improvement in the following areas as appropriate: Clinical Care/Outcomes, Customer/Service Improvement, Operational System/Process, and Safety. Demonstrates financial responsibility and accountability through the effective and efficient use of resources in daily procedures, processes and practices. Complies with Network and departmental policies regarding attendance and dress code. Demonstrates competency in the assessment, range of treatment, knowledge of growth and development and communication appropriate to the age of the patient treated. Open and close office as required. OTHER FUNCTIONS: Assists other Medical Assistants and Front Staff as needed. Attends educations training as required. Other duties as assigned. Maintains established policies and procedures, objectives, quality assessment, safety, environmental and infection control standards. PHYSICIAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS: Requires sitting, standing and walking for extended periods of time (up to 8 hours at a time). Continually uses fingers for patient care, writing and viewing patient chart in Electronic Medical Record. Routinely uses upper extremities; occasionally lift items up to 25 pounds. Occasionally push cart with supplies up to 30 pounds. Occasionally push wheelchair with patient weighing up to 325 pounds. Stoop, bend and reach above shoulder level regularly. Hearing as it relates to normal conversation and taking blood pressure readings. General vision, near vision and peripheral vision all required. POTENTIAL ON-THE-JOB RISKS: Exposure to infectious diseases due to continual patient contact. Identified Risks: Employees who work in patient care areas where they may have potential exposure to patients with suspected or proven tuberculosis (TB) must have the ability to wear a particulate respirator and be fit-tested in compliance with the current recommendations from the CDC (enforced by OSHA) or must provide physician documentation as to the inability to wear a particulate respirator. SPECIFIC PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT AVAILABLE: NONE MOST COMPLEX DUTY: Ability to maintain a working knowledge of insurance and precertification requirements Reviewing a patient’s electronic chart for information that is needed when requesting precertification. Ability to communicate effectively with physicians and team members Ability to prioritize work in an environment of constant change while meeting the needs of the office. SUPERVISION (RECEIVED BY AND/OR GIVEN TO): Supervised by the Practice Supervisor. COMMUNICATIONS: Must possess the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with patients, physicians and team members. Must be assertive and pleasant in order to gather accurate and complete data. Must be able to convey information to patients in a way that they can understand and also must know when to listen. Must be able to remain calm, tactful and even-tempered in a variety of situations. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Must demonstrate a positive attitude. Must be customer service driven, motivated and ambitious. Enjoy working with people and have the ability to collaborate with peers to solve problems. Must be proactive. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS EDUCATION: Graduate of Medical Assistant program or two years similar experience. TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Two years office experience in a similar setting. Current CPR required. WORK SCHEDULE: Days with varying hours based on the needs of the department. Travel to satellite offices may be necessary.
