The Laboratory Support Specialist is the primary contact between the laboratory and its clients i.e. physicians, physician office staff, nursing units, institutional clients, patients, and ancillary hospital service departments. In this role, the LSS responds to inquiries and initiates communication to ensure timely, efficient and effective laboratory services for the benefit of our patients and clients. In addition, the LSS receives all clinical specimens entering the laboratory and performs any necessary test ordering, specimen preparation, and labeling procedures prior to distribution to the laboratory departments and/or outside laboratories for testing.**JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:**

* Adheres to the highest standards of customer service including telephone courtesy, telephone service factor and verbal reporting of all test results. Is adept at referring questions of a technical nature to laboratory technical personnel.

* Has a working knowledge of the Hospital Information System (HIS) to register specimens in both temporary outpatient mini-registration and list billing (account) registration. Has a working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System for ordering tests performed in-house and/or sent to a reference laboratory.

* Responsible for preparing and processing specimens according to established policies and procedures.

* Communicates with reference laboratories and tracks results for tests both orderable and non-orderable in the LIS.

* Has a working knowledge of specimen testing requirements including container type, preservatives, timed specimen collections, transport requirements, labeling, priority for test ordering and specimen acceptance guidelines relative to specimen integrity.

* Reviews logs for pending specimens, failed faxes, and call lists at prescribed times during the day, and takes appropriate action in accordance with established policies and procedures.

* Maintains a daily Client Services Issue (CSI) log of all issues and inquiries that cannot be addressed immediately and takes the necessary action to insure a timely resolution. Reports unresolved CSIs to the Team Leader or Coordinator for follow-up action.

* Has a working knowledge of all departmental communication equipment and procedures, including telephone features, paging systems, beepers, fax equipment, copiers, and messaging systems.

* Receives, sorts, and distributes all departmental mail and sorts and distributes clinical reports not communicated via courier or automated systems in a timely manner.

* Orders and monitors stock of office supplies including copier paper, forms, and toner cartridges to insure uninterrupted daily operations of laboratory.

* Participates in the orientation of new personnel and continues to provide support to all personnel after their orientation. Participates in in-service training as required and applies training to work as appropriate.

**PHYSICAL AND SENSORY REQUIREMENTS:**

Sit up to 7 hours per day; 1 hour at a time. Stand for up to 8 hours per day; 3 hours at a time. Walk up to 6 hours per day; 10 minutes at a time. Occasionally lift, carry and push objects up to 30 lbs. Frequently stoop and bend. Must be able to perceive attributes of an object through touch. Must be able to hear as it relates to normal conversation, and high and low frequencies. Must be able to see as it relates to general, near, far, color and peripheral vision.

**EDUCATION:**

Minimum high school diploma or equivalent preferred, MLT preferred.

**TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE:**

Keyboarding/data entry skills. Familiarity/work experience with medical terminology a plus. Familiarity/work experience in a hospital, health care, or physicians office setting a plus.
