Location: Rose Hill Adolescent Treatment Program - Massena, NY

Position: Full-time Mental Health Counselor

Schedule: Monday through Friday, 9:00am to 5:30pm 

Pay Range: $54,000.00/year to $74,000.00/year

SIGN-ON INCENTIVE: Based upon your education level and credential(s), a hiring incentive of $4,000.00 may be attached to an offer for this job opening. Further information will be provided by St. Joseph's Human Resources team during the interview process. 

Position Summary: The incumbent of this position conducts individual, group, and family counseling, performs outreach work, compiles family assessment, and consults with appropriate counseling staff to develop and implement treatment plans. The Mental Health Counselor engages in those activities associated with their field of specialty. The Mental Health Counselor generally works a variable work week; however, they may need to work extended hours or alternate days in order to fulfill desired clinical goals and objectives.

Education and Training: Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling or related field and two years of experience as Mental Health Counselor with related experience working with families.

Physical Demands: No extraordinary physical demands required.

Experience and Work Knowledge:

  • Good knowledge of:
    • The dynamics of chemical dependency within the family component
    • Drug abuse, their language, type of abuse, pharmacology of abuse and social-economic influences
    • Appropriate therapeutic methods, theories, and practices of social case work
    • Federal, State, and local Social Services, OASAS and other agencies working with patients 
    • Adolescent development in relationship to counseling techniques, personality, group dynamics and their application
  • Good ability to:
    • Work with adolescents and the issues surrounding treatment 
    • Communicate, both in the written and verbal modes and otherwise relate to patients, administrators, families, and others in performance of assigned duties and responsibilities (especially case records)
    • Listen, understand, and appreciate the worth/value of each patient and treat them with respect and dignity 
    • Provide a positive role model, inspire confidence, determination and trust in patients and staff
    • Deal with self-prejudice, by not allowing it to interfere in relationships with patients 
    • Recognize those tasks and functions that arise within the facility for which the incumbent must be personally responsible or ensure that other personnel assume responsibility
    • Be professional at all times
  • Essential Duties: The following is a list of general tasks associated with this position. It is not meant to be all inclusive, rather an overview of responsibilities:
    • Conducts initial interview of patient and family to ascertain therapeutic appropriateness 
    • Conducts individual and family counseling
    • May conduct group counseling sessions
    • Performs extensive outreach services to those families who are unable to attend in-house services
    • Develops and implements a treatment plan in cooperation with the clinical team
    • Develops and implements the family component of treatment. This may involve educational classes as well as other approved innovative therapeutic approaches 
    • Compiles all data from interviews and counseling sessions and properly documents in an approved professional manner
    • Updates patient and family profiles on a weekly basis and in compliance with program's policies and procedures
    • Closely networks/consults with clinical staff to update team on family matters and to revise treatment plan accordingly 
    • Performs outreach work to community on various levels, g., presentations relative to services, program requirements and/or establishing a communication link for treatment.
    • Attends all scheduled meetings as designated by supervisor, e.g., weekly clinical staff meetings, intake meetings and QA/UR
    • Intrinsically involved in the discharge planning of all patients 
    • Will be involved in supervising others while working on assigned team/task(s)
