DANVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS is Hiring an Occupational Therapist Near Danville, VA

GENERAL DEFINITION OF WORK
Under the supervision of the Director III - Services for Exceptional Children, the Occupational Therapist is responsible for providing educationally relevant diagnostic and therapy services to eligible students and serving as a multidisciplinary team member.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ensure that physician's orders (if required), information releases, school records, evaluations, and other correspondence are on record and reviewed
  • Create and follow a weekly work schedule
  • Coordinate contracted services for Occupational Therapy
  • Maintain a written inventory of equipment and supplies used in programming and recommend supplies and equipment to be purchased
  • Maintain a record of student and therapist attendance at therapy sessions
  • Prepare Medicaid reports
  • Maintain equipment and materials in proper working condition
  • Complete diagnostic evaluations, including standardized assessments, and presents the results of the evaluations at multidisciplinary meetings
  • Participate as a member of the multidisciplinary team that determines eligibility for special education services
  • Develop annual goals and objectives for students who qualify for occupational therapy services (both IEP and 504)
  • Monitor the progress of students and make programming adjustments, as needed
  • Participate in team meetings and staffing, as directed
  • Provide consultation and in-service training to staff, parents, and other professionals, as directed
  • Provide technical assistance and supervision to Certified Occupational Therapy Assistants (COTAs), when applicable
  • Observe and follow all policies and procedures established by Danville Public Schools
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with all staff
  • Represent Danville Public Schools in a professional and positive manner
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information
  • Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth
  • Perform other duties as assigned
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Intellectual, sensory, and physical development of children and young adults
  • Application of occupational therapy techniques utilized in the assessment and treatment of children with disabilities
  • Educational and developmental needs of children and young adults
  • Theory of physical and mental rehabilitation underlying the practices of occupational therapy
  • Principles, methods, and objectives of occupational therapy treatment, services, techniques of skeletal anatomy, neuromuscular function and dysfunction, kinesiology and occupational therapy modalities
  • Principles of consultation, training, and supervision
  • Accurately assess the developmental status and educational needs of children and young adults
  • Identify and analyze areas of developmental sensory-motor dysfunction
  • Develop and implement treatment plans, goals, and objectives to correct sensory-motor dysfunction
  • Collaborate with Gilroy Unified staff, families, and other support staff
  • Provide consultation to classroom teachers; explain and provide training on occupational therapy and rehabilitative principles
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Maintain records and prepare comprehensive reports, including State and Federal mandated reports
  • Work as a member of the IEP/504 team, using current best practice clinical skills for working with children and young adults with moderate physical disabilities and learning challenges
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • Must hold a Master's degree from an accredited training program which has been approved by the American Occupational Therapy Association
  • Must hold or be eligible for a current Virginia license to practice as an occupational therapist
PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND WORK CONTACTS
Work is typically performed in a school setting, primarily in classrooms and throughout the school, sitting, standing, and walking while working with students, operating office equipment, and working with files. Occasional light lifting up to 40 pounds and other limited physical activities are required. Occasional field trips, which may require working beyond normal work hours. Daily contact is made with students, other teachers, and administrators in person and often by telephone, email, and/or in writing. Frequent interaction with parents/guardians.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
10 months (200 days); 7.5 hours per day
EVALUATION
Performance evaluation will be conducted annually by the Director II - Services for Exceptional Children on the effectiveness by which the employee has carried out the above responsibilities.
