Job Title: School Librarian

Summary: Creates a developmentally appropriate library/media/information technology program that promotes
learning and personal growth; motivates students to develop skills, knowledge, and attitudes needed to provide a
strong foundation for learning, as outlined in our district stated Ends Policy. Responsible for establishing effective
relationships with students, staff, parents/guardians, and community members to enhance learning opportunities.
Subscribes to and applies the principles of Multi-Tier System of Supports (MTSS) for the benefit of student and
employee development.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned.
1. Serves as a Teacher/Instructional Partner:
a. Designs, teaches, and assesses learning opportunities that include inquiry, critical thinking, and
multiple literacies in order to prepare learners to be college and career ready.
b. Collaborates with other teachers as an instructional partner in learning opportunities.
c. Promotes, engages, and motivates students to become life-long learners through reading for pleasure,
academic advancement, and to explore various genres in a quest for a better understanding of things
and diverse viewpoints.
d. Actively seeks opportunities for the use of technology in learning. Models the integration of technology
in teaching and learning.
2. Serves as an Information Specialist:
a. Develops, maintains, and promotes the use of the District's collection of resources appropriate to the
curriculum, the learners, and the teaching styles and instructional strategies used within the school
community. Such as, but not limited to reading for information, reading for pleasure, reading for critical
thinking, diverse cultural, and diverse social readings.
b. Cooperates and networks with other librarians, libraries, and agencies to provide access to educational
and technology resources outside the District.
c. Understands and promotes the ethical use of information, such as but not limited to, copyright, fair use,
and licensing of intellectual property.
d. Evaluates, promotes, and uses existing and emerging technologies to support teaching and learning,
connects the school with the global learning community, and provides equal access to library services.
e. Collaborates with ITE and other School Librarians to adopts research-based best practices that
promote the use of information resources and information technology throughout the District.
3. Serves as an Instructional Leader:
a. Advocates for equitable access to information for all learners in the school community.
b. Serves on school and District decision-making teams, as requested.
c. Measures the school library/media program according to school, state, and national standards.
d. Creates a resource-rich physical and virtual environment conducive to active and participatory learning.
e. Plans and provides professional development for colleagues as required.
f. Researches relevant and current professional practices and emerging technologies.
g. Remains current on emerging trends and best practices through active memberships in job-related
professional associations, attending professional development trainings and activities.
h. Advocates for school library programs and the role of the library program in the educational community.
4. Serves as a Program Administrator:
a. Creates and maintains a teaching and learning environment that is inviting, safe, and conducive to
student success.
b. Establishes protocols and procedures for selection, acquisition, circulation, resource sharing, and
related activities that provide appropriate resources in a timely manner.
c. Develops school library program goals and objectives that are aligned with school and district longrange continuous improvement plans for improved student learning.
d. Prepares and administers the school library program budget.
e. Manages resources and facilities for continuous improvement of the library program.
f. Participates in the recruiting, hiring, and training of other professionals, educational library assistants,
students, and volunteer staff when necessary.
g. Gathers and analyzes data to improve instruction and to demonstrate correlations between the
Standard Library Practice and student achievement.
5. Participates in professional development activities:
a. Acquires and demonstrates knowledge of current trends in library science, education, and information
technology.
b. Attends conferences, workshops, and other learning activities.
6. Performs any other related duties as assigned.
General Responsibilities: Under the direction of the school administration. May oversee the work and training of
Library/Media Technicians, other assigned staff, students, volunteers. Monitors student discipline through an
appropriate classroom management program such as, but not limited to, Positive Behavior Interventions and
Supports (PBIS). Ability to perform duties with awareness of all District requirements and Board policies. Regular
attendance in accordance with established work schedule. Demonstrated ongoing commitment to workplace
diversity, sustainability, and delivering exceptional customer service.
Qualification Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each
essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability

Education and/or Experience: Master's Degree from an American Library Association accredited program or 18
graduate credits from a School Library Media Studies program (or equivalent) including a practicum experience. A
minimum of three years of related experience is preferred.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Vermont Teaching License with School Librarian endorsement.
Language Skills: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret data from textbooks, periodicals, professional
journals/books, technical procedures, and/or governmental regulations. Ability to write lesson plans, reports,
correspondence, and procedures. Skilled in oral and written communication as evidenced by the ability to
effectively present information and respond to individuals and in group settings.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and
fundamentals of algebra and geometry. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest,
proportions, fractions, ratios, percentages, and simple math to practical situations. Ability to use a variety of
assessments and analyze student and school data to monitor student progress.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Solves
practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization
exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program;
ability to plan and implement lessons based on school and District objectives and the needs and abilities of
assigned students. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers, and
parents/guardians; Ability to keep current with technology trends and utilize technology to enhance student
instruction and learning through the use basic communication and productivity software tools including or equivalent
to: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Google Drive, Destiny Library Catalog, Student Information Systems, and e-mail.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, bend, stand, walk, talk, hear, and
see. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally kneel, climb, twist, balance, reach
overhead and push, pull, carry, or lift up to 50 lbs. such as boxes of books and technology related items or to assist
students. The employee must demonstrate manual dexterity to grasp items (i.e. chalk, papers, books) and to
operate computers, technology, and other office machinery. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close
vision such as to read handwritten or typed material; peripheral vision to monitor students and activities; and the
ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and
interact with the public and other staff.
Emotional Demands: The individual must be able to work with others in a collegial and cooperative manner, model
best behavior, must show above average interpersonal skills, and follow directions of school leadership.
Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here represent those employee encounters

The work is performed in a moderately quiet and active environment, typical of a school library. Duties are primarily
performed indoors. Occasional travel to other locations for meetings and trainings may be required.
