Solid Power is Hiring a Manufacturing Design Engineer II/III Near Louisville, CO

Position Overview:
Solid Power is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Design Engineer II/III to play a pivotal role in our Cell Development team working to revolutionize the battery industry through the development of next-generation, all solid-state rechargeable batteries. Solid Power is a dynamic, fast-paced, collaborative, and innovative team environment. A successful candidate will lead the design and optimization of battery cell manufacturing processes, ensuring the highest standard of quality, efficiency, and reliability. In addition to possessing strong mechanical engineering design skills, the ideal candidate will demonstrate expertise in manufacturing engineering, with a focus on statistical process control (SPC), process capability data analysis, and statistical tolerance stack-up analysis.
Job Duties:
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to define manufacturing requirements, specifications, and performance criteria.
  • Utilize process indices such as CpKs, PpKs, and other statistical metrics to assess process capability and identify areas for improvement, ensuring adherence to cell design standards.
  • Conduct statistical tolerance stack-up analysis to synchronize design tolerances with manufacturing process capability.
  • Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and metrics to monitor manufacturing performance and drive continuous improvement initiatives, maintaining alignment with cell design objectives.
  • Conduct regular audits and reviews of manufacturing processes to identify deviations, non-conformances, and opportunities for optimization, ensuring consistency with cell design requirements.
  • Utilize advanced CAD software (SolidWorks) and simulation tools to design/develop jigs, fixtures, and various tools to help improve the manufacturing process as needed.
  • Achieve a deep understanding of Solid Power's current battery Cell Designs and provide manufacturing expertise/input to future Cell products.
  • Conduct comprehensive analysis and optimization of manufacturing processes to meet quality and throughput (yield) targets.
  • Implement statistical process control methodologies to monitor, analyze, and improve manufacturing performance.
  • Generate comprehensive reports and presentations to communicate manufacturing performance, trends, and areas for improvement, highlighting alignment with cell design parameters.
  • Provide mentorship, guidance, and technical expertise to junior engineers and team members, fostering a culture of excellence, collaboration, and innovation across cell design and manufacturing functions.
Required Skills/Attributes:
  • Strong understanding of mechanical principles, materials science, and manufacturing processes.
  • In-depth understanding of battery cell design principles and manufacturing processes, with a focus on alignment between design parameters and manufacturing requirements.
  • Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., SolidWorks, CATIA, AutoCAD) and simulation tools.
  • Strong knowledge of statistical process control (SPC) methodologies, including six sigma principles, process capability analysis, and interpretation of CpKs and PpKs.
  • Experience with statistical software (e.g., Minitab, JMP) and data analysis techniques for monitoring and improving manufacturing performance.
  • Rapid learner and self-motivated who thrives in a collaborative start-up environment.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Effective communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly and concisely.
  • Strong leadership abilities, with experience in leading cross-functional teams and driving results.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in manufacturing engineering, preferably in battery cell technology or related industries.
  • Experience with 3D CAD Modeling and Drawings (SolidWorks Preferred) - using Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) ASME Y14.5.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong background in conducting thorough analysis of manufacturing operations, identifying areas for improvement, and implementing effective solutions to enhance productivity, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in utilizing statistical process control methodologies, process capability analysis, and statistical tolerance stack-up analysis to drive continuous improvement and ensure the highest levels of manufacturing performance and product quality.
  • Familiarity with advanced manufacturing technologies, automation systems, and equipment used in battery cell production, coupled with a deep understanding of industry trends, emerging technologies, and competitive landscapes.
Physical Requirements:
  • Prolonged periods of time in front of a computer.
  • Prolonged periods of time working in a Dry/Clean Room wearing PPE including occasional use of respirator.
Salary Range: $85,000 - $120,000 annually
