Position Summary:

The Endoscopy Charge Nurse (CN) is responsible for directing and overseeing the daily activities of the unit on an assigned shift. The CN must possess the ability to make independent decisions when circumstances warrant such action. CN’s must be knowledgeable of Endoscopy nursing practices in each area, from pre procedure to discharge of a patient. The charge must have firsthand knowledge of Endoscope processing and the Tech position, and must be able to step in to staff or trouble shoot any of these positions. The Endoscopy Charge nurse is aware of IP measures and nursing regulations. CN’s must have patience, tact, flexibility, a cheerful disposition and enthusiasm, as well as the willingness to handle difficult situations in a professional manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Oversees nursing staff on the Endoscopy unit, including Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and Techs.

Accountabilities/Essential Job Functions:

Coordinates and directs the daily patient care operations of the unit.

  • Analyzes workloads and skill requirements to meet patient care needs.
  • Assesses staff competencies and makes patient care assignments.
  • Delegates appropriate tasks to appropriate personnel, consistent with professional guidelines and departmental standards.
  • Maintains clear communications with the Lead and Nursing Director regarding unit needs and/or incidents.
  • Schedules patients including COVID test pre-procedure, ensure prep instructions are sent to patient and make pre-call for understanding and compliance.
  • Do post calls for patient satisfaction and screen for post procedure issues

Basic ability to communicate and comprehend;

  • knowledge of basic nursing skills;
  • knowledge and familiarity with the therapeutic effects and side effects of common medications administered
  • Serves as a resource person on the unit.
  • Able to communicate effectively at all levels
  • Promotes team building with all staff

Functions as a role model for current and new staff.

  • Assists physicians and other nursing personnel in the performance of various diagnostic procedures.
  • Assists in the training of new employees

Follows the hospital exposure control plans/blood borne and airborne pathogens

  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of infection control practices.
  • Participates in the hospital committee structure.
  • Is knowledgeable of the Quality Control program and the annual QI goals of the unit.

Promotes effective working relations and works effectively as part of a department/unit team inter- and intra-departmentally to facilitate the departments/units ability to meet its goals and objectives.

  • Utilizes shared management model to facilitate decision-making regarding practice, educational, and quality improvement.
  • Supports the hospital's mission, policies, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to use the computer system.
  • Reports to work on time and is at work as scheduled, as observed by nurse manager.

  • Thoroughly pursues patient/customer issues.

  • Is viewed as a resource in department when dealing with issues of systems and resources and accomplishing tasks in the most efficient and effective ways.

Qualifications:

Education/Training: Registered Nurse graduate of an accredited school of nursing.

Experience : Either a Minimum of 3 years of Endoscopy clinical experience as a direct care provider.

License/Certification: BLS required, ACLS required. Current state registration

Skills:

Demonstrated proficiency in endoscopy nursing, knowledge, and skills. Strong clinical assessment skills. Clinical resource for staff. Strong computer documentation skills. Ability to speak read and write English.

Eligibility Requirements - Employees regularly scheduled at least 20 hours per week.
