Johnson Outdoors is Hiring a Principal Engineer - Embedded Products & Networking - Fishing Near Alpharetta, GA

We are seeking a passionate and deeply experienced Principal Engineer to join our dynamic and growing team.
The ideal candidate will have a proven background in providing expert-level technical leadership to the software engineering teams throughout the product development and design phases.
We are seeking a person with deep experience in Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, LTE, NMEA 2000 and CAN Bus networking of embedded and internet connected devices. The ideal candidate will come pre-equipped to take on a senior architectural role in our product networking infrastructure and will also be ready, willing and able to rapidly learn other aspects of our technology stack. Deep experience with embedded software techniques on a variety of micro controllers using Linux and RTOS operating systems is a requirement. Pre-existing experience with sonar and digital/analog signal processing is a very strong asset.
Position is on site in Alpharetta, GA with hybrid 2 days a week if needed. Please include a cover letter with your resume and application.
What you will be doing:
  • Provides expert-level technical leadership for the software engineering team throughout the development and design phases, and additionally provides technical expertise to other business units throughout the organization. Interfaces with cross-functional teams and external resources to create synergy and alignment.
  • Researches advanced technologies in the market, follows industry technology trends, and leads new product development. Identifies and executes research projects in support of new product development projects.
  • Works on diverse projects, acts as a technical lead and mentor, advising engineers throughout the project, and problem solves critical technical issues encountered. Provides expertise throughout the product lifecycle, from initial concept to a fielded product.
  • Oversees and leads prototype generation. Evaluates prototype design, functionality, performance and reliability.
  • Ensures that all products have adequate written product specifications and meet specification requirements.
  • Reviews and documents technical feasibility evaluations, qualification, field and competitive testing to verify appropriateness and compliance of the designs.
  • Reviews and communicates testing results and required corrective actions. Follows up to ensure compliance to corrective action plan.
  • Develops and implements best practices, processes and process improvements for the engineering team relevant to product design, documentation, and testing.
  • Introduces new tools and techniques to improve and streamline new product development. Organizes, facilitates and/or conducts training on new software packages and development methods.
  • Provides input and direction on product and technology roadmaps. Advises on resource gaps and needs to execute against roadmaps.
  • Ensures successful implementation and resolution of post launch issues. Answers difficult technical questions and solves complex problems that have a broad impact on the business.
  • Provides career mentorship and team leadership to select senior software engineers.
Additional Details:
  • Bachelor's or postgraduate degree in computer science, engineering, mathematics, physics, or related field required.
  • This position is headquartered in Alpharetta, GA. Periodic travel between the engineering offices in Alpharetta, GA; Eufaula, AL; Mankato, MN; and Toronto, ON is required. Periodic travel to trade shows, vendors and other locations is required. Periodic travel to manufacturing facilities in Mexico and Southeast Asia may also be periodically required.
  • This is an in office role. Flexibility exists to allow for telework a maximum of two days per week, as and when the project work allows.
