POSITION: Director of Medical Social Services
Job Summary:
The Director of Medical Social Services directs and oversees trauma-informed and medically related social services of the Kosair for Kids Complex Care Center at the direction of the Senior Vice President / Administrator, in collaboration with departmental leadership, physicians, and the Interdisciplinary Team. The Director of Medical Social Services provides leadership, guidance, and support, partnering with residents, responsible parties, and families to ensure residents achieve and sustain their highest practicable emotional and psychosocial well-being and quality of life. The Director of Medical Social Services embodies the Core Values of compassion, wellness, excellence, and empowerment to ensure standards of excellence and quality that adhere to federal, state, local, and facility standards, guidelines, and regulatory requirements while maintaining an environment in which children, young adults, families, and team members thrive.
Supervisory Responsibilities:
  • This position directly supervises the Medical Social Services Coordinator, Resident Transition Specialist, and Eligibility Specialist
Duties/Responsibilities:
  • Direct and oversee the provision of medically related social services that support and engage residents and their families.
  • Providing multi-faceted leadership, support, and service, focusing on meeting the needs of parents and guardians.
  • Oversee and provide case management to help residents and/or their parents or guardians address and resolve the psychosocial and emotional problems.
  • Oversee and provide financial resource management for residents and residents’ responsible parties.
  • Manage, evaluate, and ensure regulatory compliance of medically related social services and protocols.
  • Assist residents and/or their parents or guardians with advance care planning.
  • Collaborate with KCC Training and Development Department to provide education and training pertaining to residents’ needs and rights, in line with regulations and standards.
  • Develop, implement, and oversee Medical Social Services Department financial objectives collaboratively with departmental leadership to meet fiscal targets.
  • Maintain continual professional licensure and continuing education requirements.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Excellent leadership and interpersonal skills with the ability to build and foster strong relationships and gain support among internal and external stakeholders to seek innovation and influence change.
  • Superior listening and verbal communication skills.
  • Emotionally stable and compassionate with the ability to demonstrate empathy towards residents and families in stressful situations and at the end of life.
  • Proficient with current Microsoft Office Suite and related software.
Education and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Social Work or a bachelor’s degree in a human services field including, but not limited to, sociology, special education, rehabilitation counseling, and psychology is required. Master of Social Work Degree is preferred.
  • Minimum one year of supervised social work experience in a health care setting working directly with individuals is required.
Physical Requirements:
  • May be mentally and emotionally demanding.
  • Extended work hours and 24-hour availability.
  • Must be able to push, pull, move and/or lift a minimum of 35 lbs. up to 65 lbs. unassisted, from the floor using proper body mechanics.
  • Must be able to physically attend and participate in continuing education and training on-site, off-site, in the community, and out of state.
