Position Summary

The Seattle Colleges are looking for innovative and dedicated faculty members, who have a demonstrated commitment to working within a college community that is diverse and serves students from a broad spectrum of socioeconomic and academic backgrounds.

Under the supervision of the Vice President of Administrative Services, the Part-time Faculty Counselor is responsible for counseling assigned students. Although the position may initially be assigned to a specific division, in the future these assignments may be in line to rotate to other programs at Seattle Central.

Successful applicants will have the ability to work effectively with students, colleagues, staff and others in a campus climate that promotes cultural diversity and multicultural understanding in an urban environment.
Successful applicants may be invited to interview at one of the colleges in the Seattle Colleges District, North Seattle, Seattle Central, or South Seattle.

This position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement with representation by AFT-Seattle.

What you will be working on:

  • Provide culturally responsive educational, career, and short-term counseling services to students on an individual basis.
  • Assist students in resolving problems affecting their educational and personal development including developing interpersonal skills for success in college, work, and life; counsel students who are on academic probation.
  • Provide crisis intervention to students.
  • Act as student advocate.
  • Provide information and referrals to appropriate support services as well as community resources.
  • Provide student persistence and retention counseling.
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Counsel students who are on academic probation.
  • Consult with faculty and staff regarding individual student behavior, classroom management issues, and the student code of conduct.
  • Work collaboratively across the district and lead (if directed) projects and initiatives in support of student success
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Interpret college placement test scores.
  • Teach human development course

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Educational Counseling, Social Work, or a related field that includes a supervised counseling practicum.
  • Evidence of successful work in a multiethnic/multicultural/diverse setting.
  • Community college counseling and classroom teaching experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience with strategies promoting student persistence, intervention, and student follow-up.
  • Successful teaching and counseling non-traditional, at-risk students with varying backgrounds, educational attainment, physical ability, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Successful work with individuals and groups that represent a wide range of diverse cultural, geographic, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Physical Requirements

Ability to perform a range of physical motions, exerting up to 25 pounds; lifting and carrying up to 25 pounds; standing, walking, sitting for long periods of time, kneeling, squatting, and stooping; and traversing up and down stairs.
