Shawnee Mission School District is Hiring a Library Media Specialist 1.0 FTE 2024-25 School Year Near Overland Park, KS

Position: Librarian
Reports to: Principal
Contract: 190 days – New Teacher
187 days – Returning Teacher
Summary: Under the supervision of building administration, the Library Media/Information and Learning Specialist is responsible for supporting efforts to increase student achievement through demonstrating, applying and providing professional development on innovative instructional practices. The Library Media Specialist/Information and Learning Specialist is also responsible for delivering the district library media curriculum in a manner that encourages creativity, innovation, communication, collaboration, and information literacy and results in enhanced student learning. Leading and managing the library media budget and all subsequent resources in order to develop a current and innovative resource collection is a critical component to the duties of the Library Media Specialist/Information and Learning Specialist. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Other duties may be assigned The Library Media/Information and Learning Specialist performs the following essential duties and responsibilities:
Leader
  • Leads innovative practices in technology integration.
  • Provides professional learning for staff in order to develop rich instructional practices, including but not limited to supporting literacy, information processing, and technology integration, which result in improved academic, behavioral and personal growth of all students.
  • Provides support for parents to assist students at home through on-line and technology resources, as well as other methods for school-home collaboration.
  • Serves as a leader in supporting and promoting information, collaboration, and innovation through modeling of instructional practices as well as supporting staff through the sharing of resources and professional development opportunities.
  • Leads and/or participates in professional learning communities as appropriate.
Instructional Partner
  • Provides academic and performance support for students and staff.
  • Demonstrates expertise in instructional practices (emphasizing literacy, technology integration and information/resource utilization).
Information Specialist
  • Maintains and updates relevant library media/innovation station materials, equipment and facilities for effective and efficient utilization of all materials and resources.
  • Provides stakeholders with a well-balanced, up-to-date collection, and promotes resource sharing.
  • Leads, manages and supports online eBook platforms and resource collection systems in order to efficiently and effectively support student and staff utilization of all materials.
  • Manages and maintains necessary library media budget to maximize resource acquisition through the purchasing and processing of materials aligned to library media standards.
  • Creates a physical environment conducive to creativity and learning.
  • Creates an emotional atmosphere conducive to creativity and learning.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers to align information, increase collaboration, and develop innovation.
  • Collaborates with other building and district staff members.
Teacher
  • Identifies and targets specific instruction for students.
  • Writes and implements long-range and daily plans which incorporate district/course curricular objectives.
  • Supports students in understanding the importance and expectations of digital citizenship.
  • Fosters an appreciation for literacy while instilling a love of reading and learning.
  • Facilitates assessments as needed.
  • Incorporates curricular revisions & new programs into instruction.
  • Demonstrates effective presentation skills and styles, which address curricular objectives.
  • Uses reinforcement to influence positive behavior.
Professional Responsibilities

  • Library/media specialist endorsement (preferred)
  • Master’s Degree in applicable educational content/field
  • Previous experience as a library/media specialist and/or teacher.
  • Proven success in utilizing, implementing and sharing technology resources and supports, which positively impacted student achievement.
  • Demonstrates ability to implement best practice and innovative learning activities
  • Self-motivated and driven to set and achieve high performance levels.
  • Committed to professional development evidenced by ongoing skill development and exemplary job performance.
Education and/or Experience:
  • Previous experience as a teacher
  • Library/media specialist endorsement (preferred)
  • Master’s Degree in applicable educational content/field
Language Skills:
  • Ability to read and interpret documents including the analysis of district assessment data.
  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbal and in writing, with parents, patrons, staff and students.
  • Exemplary large and/or small group presentation skills.
  • In addition, as an organization/community that reflects and appreciates diversity, bilingual communication skills are noted and valued.
