Airport Maintenance Department – Terminal

Shift: Monday-Friday, 7:00 am-3:00 pm (shift hours, including the possibility of moving to 2nd shift, may vary during winter operations)

Rate of Pay: $28.00/hr. (2024 rate)

Position Summary

Under the general supervision of Assistant Terminal Maintenance Manager, this position performs inspections, troubleshooting, repair, and routine maintenance of airport facilities’ mechanical and electromechanical systems to include but not limited to HVAC, pumps, motors, generators, doors, etc. As a member of the Airport’s Maintenance Department, this position also performs snow operations as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.

Duties of Position

Examples of duties may include, but are not limited to:

✈ Diagnose electrical and mechanical faults for HVAC systems and complete necessary repairs as appropriate.

✈ Conduct regular preventive maintenance inspections of refrigeration units, isolated heating and ventilating units, including boilers, gas, and electrically operated air conditioning equipment, and make necessary adjustments or repairs.

✈ Repair or replace defective parts in units and equipment and their controls, including thermostats, automatic switches, fan controls, log switches, damper motors, louvers, relays, filters, controls, belts.

✈ Operate a variety of hand and power tools, welder torch, test equipment. Maintain equipment in effective and safe working condition; maintain parts and tool inventory.

✈ Work with and assist electricians in the repair, installation and alteration of HVAC equipment, components, timers, motors, and wiring systems as needed; connect motors to control panels.

✈ Install, rebuild, replace, or repair fans, motors, thermostats, fuses, filters, bearings, valves, controls, gaskets, and other equipment as necessary.

✈ Maintain records and complete work orders.

✈ Coordinate and work with outside contractors as necessary.

✈ Identify replacement parts using manuals and other reference materials.

✈ Perform internet searches for electrical related parts, availability, and repair techniques.

✈ Input information into computer databases.

✈ Inspect and monitor work performed by others (ex. contractors) for the airport and tenants (as appropriate) to ensure proper installation, maintenance, repairs, etc.

✈ Report verbally and in writing, as needed, to supervisor regarding work completed and needed.

✈ Perform locksmithing duties and assignments as needed.

✈ Perform sign making duties and assignments as needed.

✈ Drive equipment on ramps, taxiways, aircraft parking areas, and safety areas. Must communicate and follow radio directions from the air traffic control tower.

✈ Participate in Airport sponsored special events.

✈ Under stressful circumstances, assist Airport staff during emergencies involving aircraft or vehicle accidents or incidents and inclement or hazardous weather preparation, event, and recovery.

✈ Perform snow removal operations to include salting, sanding, shoveling, brooming, plowing and the application of de-ice and anti-icing products.

✈ Overtime as required.

✈ Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications / Functional Requirements

Position Specific

Three (3) years of experience in HVAC or performance of duties closely aligned with above listed “Duties of Position”.

HVAC Certification (preferred, not required).

Electronic experience (preferred, not required).

Department Specific

High School diploma, GED, or equivalent education.

Must possess and maintain a valid United States, state issued, driver's license.

Must complete and pass a comprehensive background and Criminal History Records check and be able to obtain security and access credentials.

Must pass a pre-employment drug screening.

Must be able to obtain Airfield “Movement Area” driving certification for controlled access to all surfaces (runways, taxiways, aprons, etc.) within six (6) months of employment. Training to be provided.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Position Specific

✈ Knowledge of basic and standard practices of the HVAC trade.

✈ Working knowledge and understanding of HVAC and refrigeration systems.

✈ Ability to properly use manual and electrical tools and equipment applicable to the HVAC repair and maintenance.

✈ Knowledge of health and safety regulations applicable to areas of work.

✈ Ability to perform highly detailed and organized record-keeping.

✈ Knowledge of safe and proper methods of storage for equipment, materials, and supplies.

✈ Ability to perform preventive maintenance and routine servicing of equipment.

✈ Ability to operate specialized machinery, equipment and tools utilized in the repair, installation and maintenance of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems.

✈ Knowledge and skills of mechanical maintenance duties in the inspection, repair, installation and ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration systems and related equipment and facilities.

✈ Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.

✈ Knowledge of methods, tools and materials in the repair and maintenance of HVAC and heating systems.

✈ Knowledge of safety precautions and practices common to electrical/mechanical work.

✈ Must be capable of working on highly technical aviation related operating equipment with the highest degree of safety.

✈ Ability to supervise the work activities of persons that may be providing on-site assistance.

✈ Ability to record and document work performed and/or installed or modified.

✈ Knowledge of braising and soldering.

✈ Ability to operate and perform work on aerial lifts to a height of 50 feet.

Department Specific

✈ Knowledge of occupational safety rules and best practices.

✈ Knowledge of the operation and routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment used in performance of duties.

✈ Knowledge of tools and equipment required to complete the above listed tasks.

✈ Vision abilities required include close, distant, color, peripheral, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Vision acuity of 20/40 corrected or better.

✈ Ability to see and work at night and in dimly lit conditions as necessary.

✈ Knowledge of two-way radio communication skills utilizing aviation radio procedures and use of the phonetic alphabet (OJT)

✈ Knowledge of OSHA safety rules.

✈ Knowledge of materials, methods and techniques used in building and ground maintenance as appropriate to the required duties.

✈ Knowledge of hand tools and tools applicable to normally assigned tasks.

✈ Ability to understand, speak, read, and write fluent English.

✈ Ability to receive, understand and follow verbal and written directions.

✈ Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, Airport tenants and contractors.

✈ Ability to work various shifts as assigned.

✈ Ability to perform manual labor in all weather conditions.

✈ Ability to walk and work on unstable soil conditions.

✈ Ability to work in adverse weather conditions, day, or night, to include very hot and humid temperatures as well as very cold and damp conditions.

✈ Ability to respond to emergencies in a timely manner.

✈ Ability to operate independently and/or within a team environment.

✈ Ability to work in a fast-paced maintenance environment.

✈ Ability to learn, understand and remember normal tasks.

✈ Ability to see and read letters, numbers, characters, and symbols.

✈ Ability to identify colors.

✈ Ability to use small hand tools which require the use of hands, wrists, and fingers.

✈ Ability to climb ladders and stairs.

✈ Ability to lift large pieces of equipment, including bending and squatting, up to and including 75lbs.

✈ Ability to walk, bend, stoop, crawl, kneel and stand for prolonged periods of time, up to 8 hrs.

✈ Ability to sit for prolonged periods of time, up to 12 hours.

✈ Ability to work within expected timelines.

✈ Ability to provide exceptional customer service and interact with passengers to include those who may be emotionally distressed and/or have disabilities (hidden or otherwise).
