Description

Sargent & Lundy’s Government Services Division provides cutting-edge engineering design and consulting support to the management and operating contractors for US Department of Energy (DOE) sites and national laboratories. Specifically, we support the DOE Environmental Management Directorate as well as the National Nuclear Security Administration laboratories and sites. What does this mean? You can be a part of multi-discipline design teams supporting projects cleaning up the environmental damage associated with the legacy nuclear weapons production complex and/or preserving our country’s nuclear deterrent. Sargent & Lundy’s personnel design facilities, systems, and equipment that treat, store, and dispose of nuclear waste as well as systems that safely handle and process nuclear material. This mission-critical work is meaningful and challenging – work you can be proud of.

Our Government Services Group, one of our five (5) market-focused business units, has opportunities for engineering professionals in our Instrumentation and Controls engineering group. This group specializes in the design of special-purpose gloveboxes and the associated controls and auxiliary systems, precision furnaces, hot cells, custom pressure vessels, and other one-of-a-kind equipment.

  • As an Instrumentation and Controls Associate Intern, you will be assigned to work on a project team and assist the engineering team members in the execution of their project work. These projects may involve the design of new and/or modifications and upgrades to existing plant systems, components, and structures and are a synergistic integration of both electrical and mechanical engineering along with control theory
  • Working under the direction of senior engineers, this position will offer you the opportunity to utilize and expand your academic background in with electronic process sensors, digital controllers, touchscreen displays, pumps, valves, and heat exchangers to improve the operation of nuclear process systems
  • Assist in the preparation of engineering calculations, specifications, and designs
  • Work on a variety of tasks associated with project reporting, such as tracking and evaluating project activities, project progress, and associated data

Qualifications

Must be a U.S. Citizen; Dual citizenship with a country other than the U.S. does not qualify.

Essential skills and experience:

  • Must be able to pass a U.S. Government security clearance check
  • Must be actively enrolled in a BS or MS engineering program from an ABET Engineering Accreditation Commission-approved program with a strong academic background and coursework
  • Must be graduating by Spring 2025
  • Coursework in Mechanical and Electrical engineering
  • Good verbal and written communication skills along with strong PC skills

Valued but not required skills and experience:

  • Prior, related internship or co-op experience is preferred
  • Coursework and/or experience in mechatronics and/or robotics
  • An understanding of the practical application of electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and technology, including applying systems, principles, techniques, and procedures to a project design

Salary Range

$47,000 - $53,000
