Santa Cruz County Office of Education is Hiring a Substitute Alternative Media Specialist, Visually Impaired Near Santa Cruz, CA
Job Summary This position will be assigned to the Special Education department: Under general supervision, assist teachers in the instruction, supervision and/or care of students; transcribe a wide variety of instructional materials into Braille, large print and/or alternative media; assist teachers with preparation of classroom materials and resources; act as a lead in organizing duties of volunteer transcribers; maintain adaptive instructional materials inventory, supplies and equipment; provide technical support and training to the visually impaired program.
This is a temporary position covering an employee leave for up to 6 months. The working hours of this position would be determined by the applicant's availability. Requirements / Qualifications Please read the full job description.
Education: Equivalent to the completion of the twelfth grade.
Experience: Two years experience in working with visually impaired students. Additional specialized training in child development, education or a related field is desirable.
License or Certificate: Valid certificate that shows Braille proficiency obtained through interactive Braille teaching program. Alternatively, applicants may take and pass our skills exam to show proficiency if they do not have a Braille certificate. Must be able to use transcription software to provide literacy Braille and math Braille to reading students with complete accuracy. Application Procedures: This is an on-call/temporary position. Applications is will be continuously screened. Applicants must submit a completed application and are encouraged to attach a rsum and proof that you have a Braille proficiency certificate to the application material. Alternatively, those who cannot provide proof of a Braille certificate are welcome to take the basic skills exam via Zoom to satisfy the requirement.
If selected, fingerprinting is required. You will need to supply our office with a negative tuberculosis test clearance. The certificate is good for a four-year period. You can have the test done through the Santa Cruz Health Department, Doctors on Duty Clinic or by calling a physician or a clinic of your choice.
