Exciting opportunity for two (2) seasoned Heavy Duty Mechanics where you can align yourself with a team who understands their responsibilities and are subject matter experts in their craft , dedicated to providing quality service . The team takes care in eco-friendly clean up and reporting.

HD Mechanics are responsible for all vehicle and equipment maintenance both light and heavy duty. The equipment is used daily within Transfer Stations and at the Cedar Hills Landfill. The eight Transfer Stations, two drop boxes, and a 920-acre active landfill are managed under the Operations Section of the Solid Waste Division. Maintenance employees are required to inspect, diagnose, and repair vehicles and equipment to keep the operation functional.

About the Role:
These positions require working on a variety of mechanical, electrical, electronic, powertrain and hydraulic systems for vehicles, on and off road construction equipment, portable and stationary equipment, gasoline and diesel powered vehicles at the Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in the Operations Section of King County's Solid Waste Division.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:
  • Ability to diagnose and repair all types of vehicles and equipment from gas, diesel and hybrid-powered, but not limited to automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, backhoes, dozers, street sweepers, loaders and refuse trailers.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, repair, and replace ignition systems, fuel systems, lighting systems, electrical/computer control systems, ABS brake systems.
  • Maintain and document service, maintenance and repair records and work orders.
  • Provide technical assistance, repairs and problems on work orders and advice on complex or unusual projects. Read and interpret equipment manuals, electric and hydraulic schematics and illustrated parts diagrams.
  • Use a Windows -based computer program for tracking all work performed and retrieving information about work to be performed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

Qualifications You Bring:
  • Four (4) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy-duty diesel, vehicles, and construction equipment. Medium and light duty automotive vehicles repair and maintenance. OR
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Journey Level Mechanic in heavy-duty diesel vehicle and construction equipment or automotive repair and maintenance and completion of a two-year vocational, military, community college diesel automotive mechanics program or an accredited recognized state approved apprenticeship program. OR
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skill to perform the work of the position.
  • Basic computer skills required to enter and extract information from an automated maintenance system, use of manuals and related online software applications.
  • Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with current Medical Card or ability to obtain one within 6 months of employment

It Would Be Great If You Also Bring:
  • Knowledge of mechanical principles of gasoline, diesel hybrid engines, fluid, pneumatic and hydraulic systems; powertrain, suspension and chassis components and assemblies; electrical, ignition, braking, heating and air conditioning systems.
  • Knowledge of current diagnostic techniques and equipment used in industrial, heavy-duty fleet and construction repair operations.
  • Knowledge of industrial safety rules, shop safety rules and applicable regulations and procedures that apply to a vehicle repair facility.
  • Skill in the operation of electronic diagnostic equipment as well as power hand and air tools utilized in a maintenance repair facility.
  • Skill in the operations of pneumatic lifts, hoists, jacks, drill press, vehicle mounted cranes.
  • Customer service skills in working with multiple individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Communications and interpersonal skills in establishing and maintaining effective positive working relations.
Supplemental Information

Working Conditions:
  • Work Location: The work associated with this position will be located: Cedar Hills Landfill, 16645 228th Avenue SE, Maple Valley, WA and Farwest Maintenance Location, 201 SW 34th St, Renton, WA.
  • Work Schedule: These positions work a 40-hour workweek and is overtime eligible with Supervisor approval. These positions may be required to work alternative work schedules (including evenings and weekends) to support core service hours. Work schedules are bid by seniority following the union collective bargaining agreement. Work schedules are as follows: Day shifts: 5/8 Mon - Fri 6am - 2:30pm, 4/10 Sun - Wed and Wed - Sat 6am-4:30pm; Night shifts: 5/8 Mon - Fri 2:30pm - 11pm. The Solid Waste Division is only closed Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day. In this position, you are considered an essential employee and will be expected to work during weather, health and other emergency events. This position is covered under the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is overtime eligible.
  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Joint Crafts Council, Local No. 289.
  • Physical Environment : The candidate must have the ability and willingness to work in an industrial site setting with adverse conditions such as dust, odor, high volume noise and heavy traffic.
