About the position:
The Senior Industrial Designer will help lead the creative efforts as it relates to physical product design and creation. This role will be charged with sharing and consuming inspiration, trends and forward thinking concepts with our department.
A Senior Industrial Designer must be creative and imaginative while keeping top of mind customer type (user), manufacturing/production capabilities (efficiency), specifications (cost & profitability), materials (quality) and testing standards (safety).
Compensation ranges from $76,000 - $80,000
What a typical day looks like:
Design, refine and develop a broad range of commercial quality Educational Furniture, following product development process from concept to final production
Translate current market trends into product ideas that address business needs for the relevant product categories, collections and exclusive brands.
Creation of sketches, CAD’s and renderings to show visualization to be used in internal review, prototyping, request for quoting and detailed production specifications
Understand structural and commercial quality requirements as well as BIFMA and other testing standards for furniture in Educational Market
Coordinate with product teams from sampling to manufacturing to ensure affordability, quality and viability from a production standpoint which could include off the shelf sample enhancements and approval assistance
Possess detailed knowledge of product specifications and construction to collaborate with engineering and accurately communicate/assist manufacturer development
Create digital environmental layouts with predefined product that supports the marketing of classroom solutions, alternate product imagery and to accompany large bids/quotes in support of Sales efforts.
Basic understanding of patents and ability to research and/or interact with legal team to ensure that there is no conflict or infringements
Assist with content and training to aid the launch of new products
Maintain library of files, materials and resources
Attend training and trade shows to gain understanding of the Educational Market
Factory visits to gain understanding of production processes and capabilities
Coordinate with Sourcing team to design new packaging requirements, assembly instructions, labeling and other collateral material
Utilize tool for user testing and conduct field research throughout ideation, design and protype process
Other duties as assigned by manager
What you will bring to the team:
Bachelor’s degree in relevant field preferred
Ability to prioritize and function in a fast-pace environment, handle multiple projects at once and work collaboratively with teammates and other departments
Minimum two years of experience in Furniture Design with Portfolio
Strong understanding of Furniture Regulations preferred, including BIFMA, Green Guard, CAL 117, Prop 65, CPSIA
Strong sketching and drafting skills for proposal drawings
Advanced proficiency in Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) necessary
Experience with Solidworks, Photo Shop, Adobe Illustrator
Should be familiar with tools necessary to create prototypes, such as CNC Router, Laser Cutting, 3D Printing and assorted tools both hand and power
