The primary function of this position is to drive technical excellence, affordability, and program execution by supporting program development, execution of program requirements, adherence to engineering development processes, promoting customer focus, and serving as the technical conscience for their program. Ensure technical integrity of the work products from group. Serve as a catalyst for staff by inspiring constructive exploration and experimentation in ways of improving delivery, user experience and business outcomes. Applies advanced engineering and scientific principles to the evaluation and solution of technical problems. Initiates the planning, organizing, performing, coordinating and/or directing of engineering work, and may conduct performance evaluations. Remains abreast of and consults on technical advancements. Identifies and routinely uses the most effective, cost efficient and best practices to execute processes; continually evaluates their effectiveness and appropriateness. Ensure team compliance with legal and regulatory issues in such areas as products and services, workplace safety and contractor relationships, and training. Provide technical coaching and mentoring, employee career development, continuous ongoing feedback, and being their employees advocate for growth and opportunity. Ensure team understands their jobs and how they will be measured against performing their jobs satisfactorily.What You’ll Work On:Execute on projects.Give technical systems engineering direction to the team; accurately evaluate and assess complex processes; identify possible solutions and drive to resolution; negotiate, troubleshoot, assess, remediate; make sound decisions; and successfully drive on-time product launches for complex products.Ensures effective and rigorous implementation of Systems Engineering practices including requirements management, risk management, interface control.Ensures high quality and comprehensive documentation that exceeds quality assurance expectations.Leads and develops team to excel in root cause investigations.Plans, organizes, and supports all aspects of a project regarding budgeting, staffing, communication and conflict resolution.Build effective relationships.Be personally accountable for ensuring collaborative relationships with R&D Departments (Hardware, Reliability, Verification, Integration, Lab Services, Software, Algorithm), Program Management Office, Quality Assurance, Operations, Global Services. Work across functions with peers in other groups to ensure collaboration for shared goals. Demonstrate excellence in customer relations, internally and externally.Builds and supports a high performance and disciplined organization.Cultivate excellent working relationships with outside Abbott partners and then ensure effective communication and problem solving (including people/personality issues).Manages within a matrix organization, including managing by influence within ADD or in a comparable capacity outside of Abbott.Perform resource planning and allocation.Perform resource management and alignment of capabilities to meet the strategic vision and needs of the business. Identify and ensure appropriate utilization of the tools appropriate to discipline. Staff appropriately trained and skilled individuals to meet the needs of the business. Ensure appropriate laboratories and infrastructure to support the needs of staff. Staff development and workforce planning.Manages and develops subordinate managers and/or employees who exercise significant latitude and independence.Develops engineering budgets and capital plans.Establishes operating policies and procedures that affect department and subordinate sections.Establishes external contact with other engineering companies and professional organizations to evaluate best practices in organizational design, product development, and technological trends.Lead attraction and development initiatives for ADD R&D personnel.Serve as channel for company communications.Disseminate corporate-, division-, R&D CoE-, and site-related information to direct reports. Engage with direct reports weekly. Communicate financial and goal results, and key performance indicators.Leads briefings and technical meetings for internal and external representatives.Works across business functions to foster, support, and drive cross-functional project initiatives and tasks. Able to coordinate between key stakeholders and resources.Secure future work opportunities.Strive to practice a full employment policy for direct reports whose performance is satisfactory. Seek and develop new business opportunities, while the direct reports focus on driving the day-to-day operations. Strategy development of group as it aligns with the overall strategy of the COE, R&D, and Abbott Diagnostics Division (ADD). Cascade that strategy to direct reports.EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE YOU’LL BRINGMinimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in a technical or scientific discipline (Post graduate degree preferred).Ten plus years of industry experience, at least three in a managerial or supervisory role.Experience with complex systems development, architecture, software or system integration.Understands engineering standards, FDA regulation, performance confirmation methods and development practices within Abbott, or in a comparable environment outside of Abbott (i.e. DOD, Aerospace, etc.)Must have project management experience including managing multiple projectsStrong interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills necessary to develop and maintain smooth, cooperative working relationships with all levels of Management and to drive change across business functions.Proven ability to negotiate, troubleshoot, assess, remediate; and ability to make sound decisions and complex tradeoffs to successfully drive on-time product launches for complex products.Demonstrated ability to work in a Federal Regulated Environment Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal means.Strategic, multi-disciplined thinker who defines overall system design and prioritizes resolution of engineering technical risks in developing new systems.Preferred Qualifications:Eight plus years of management experience.Five plus years Systems Engineering experience including: Systems Integration, Requirements Development, Risk Management and System Reliability complex systems.Systems Engineering experience with complex electro-mechanical devices.Experience in understanding and complying with applicable FDA regulations.Experience presenting to Senior Executive Leadership and Customer Representative.Learn more about our benefits that add real value to your life to help you live fully:.
