Our mission is to make biology easier to engineer. Ginkgo is constructing, editing, and redesigning the living world in order to answer the globe’s growing challenges in health, energy, food, materials, and more. Our bioengineers make use of an in-house automated foundry for designing and building new organisms. Today, our foundry is developing over 40 different organisms to make different products across multiple industries.
The protein engineering team works to address the complex challenges of protein discovery, characterization, and engineering. We utilize state-of-the-art computational software and automation at Ginkgo to develop and understand novel proteins and rationally designed variants thereof. We devise new methods for diversity generation and complementary screening procedures across many scales, which carefully match our customers' requirements.
We’re looking for someone who is excited about the promise of synthetic biology and the premier role of biomolecular engineering in biology by design. If you sleep not only to maintain healthy levels of protein in the brain, but also because you inevitably dream of dynamical proteins dancing in conformational ensembles, then you are at the right place.

- Optimize and perform multiplexed experimental protein characterization assays including such tasks as: DNA transformation; culturing; flow-cytometry analysis and sorting; DNA harvesting and preparation.
- Perform programmatic analysis of said datasets to inform protein library design
- Further the development of multiplexed protein characterization pipelines via standardization and improvement of experimental workflows
- Work with laboratory automation to streamline experimental procedures
- Compile and present data to interested parties using appropriate mediums
Desired Experience and Capabilities
- BS/MS in biology, biochemistry, bioengineering, molecular biology, chemical engineering or a related field
- Experience in industrial and/or academic biotech laboratory settings
- High experimental rigor and experience designing experiments independently
- Exposure and direct experience with protein display technologies (yeast, bacterial, and/or ribosomal) a plus
- Exposure and direct experience with preparing materials for and interpreting data from next-generation sequencing platforms (Illumina, PacBio, etc) a plus
- Demonstrated ability with computational workflows (via Python, MATLAB, etc)

We also feel that it’s important to point out the obvious here – there’s a serious lack of diversity in our industry, and that needs to change. Our goal is to help drive that change. Ginkgo is deeply committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion in all of its practices, especially when it comes to growing our team. Our culture promotes inclusion and embraces how rewarding it is to work with people from all walks of life.
We’re developing a powerful biological engineering platform, so we must remain mindful of the many ways our technology can – and will – impact people around the world. We care about how our platform is used, and having a diverse team to build it gives us the best chance that it’s something we’ll be proud of as it continues to grow. Therefore, it’s critical that we incorporate the diverse voices and visions of all those who play a role in the future of biology.
It is the policy of Ginkgo Bioworks to provide equal employment opportunities to all employees and employment applicants.
