South Federal Animal Hospital is Hiring a Veterinary Technician Or Veterinary Assistant Near Fort Lauderdale, FL

-JOB DESCRIPTION-

VETERINARY TECHNICIAN

Introduction:

The Veterinary Technician position at South Federal Animal Hospital requires a multitude of abilities and skills including critical thinking skills. Our goal is to interview and assess qualities/skills that will best fit our need as veterinary technician.

You will work very closely with veterinarians, practice manager, and staff members in all aspects of their daily duties. We are looking for a hardworking, compassionate, and honest person to join our team.

Minimum qualification:

· Education: High school graduate or GED certified

· At least 1 year experience as veterinary technician at another hospital

· Able to lift 25lbs without any physical limitations, stand on their feet for 8 hours/day and work outside for brief periods during the day in rain or shine

· Able to work with dogs and cats without physical limitations

· Able to control/restrain large, anxious or angry dogs and cats

· Able to adapt to the needs and styles of doctors and other technicians

Major Goals:

· To have excellent customer service skills. Must have a composure to be pleasant, courteous, polite, and helpful to all clients at all times.

· To have excellent communication skills with doctors, practice manager and other staff members within the hospital.

· To be comfortable with operating computers.

· To have the following technical skills and comfortable performing under pressure for canine and feline species: phlebotomy, urine (including cystocentesis) and fecal collection, intravenous catheter placement and fluid administration, drug administration, elective surgery anesthesia monitoring, veterinary dentistry, laboratory procedures (includes parasite identification), and perform diagnostic radiographic procedures

· To be compassionate and be patient advocate at all times

· To be comfortable educating clients about basic husbandry, vaccine protocols, preventatives for both species

· To have excellent medical record keeping and follow-through skills

· To have basic telephone operator skills

· To act professional and have basic hygiene

· Follow and understand basic OSHA/DEA/AAHA regulations for record keeping

Major Duties:

Basic responsibilities

· Follow employee general policies as outlined in the Employee Handbook

· Time management is YOUR responsibility.

· Keep hospital clean and tidy at all times

· Hospital should not have an foul odor

Examination room responsibilities

· Prepare examination room for clients and doctors

· Obtain patient signalmen, basic history and vitals of patients before examination (introduce yourself to clients and tell them what you are going to do)

· Obtain blood or fecal sample as indicated

· For annual exam, prepare vaccines and input charges into Cornerstone before doctor is called into the exam room

· For consultation, foresee what medications or equipment(s) doctors may need before going into the exam room

· Restrain animals for examination

· Perform and educate clients on basic husbandry skills: nail trims, anal gland expressions, etc.

· Prepare medication and medication labels for patient

· Educate clients on how to administer medications at home

· Prepare radiograph viewing for clients

· Escort clients to reception area for payment processing

· Prepare examination room for the next client

· Perform basic inventory management

Laboratory responsibilities:

· Obtained samples must be labeled appropriately and setup for examinations

· Maintain record keeping of AAHA lab logs at all times

· Perform in-house CBC/CHEM/Lytes/UA/Fecal examinations/Felv/Fiv/Heartworm tests

· Prepare and stain ear cytology slides

· Prepare and identify fecal ova on direct and fecal flotations

· Basic maintenance and troubleshooting of all equipment used in laboratory

· Perform basic inventory management

Pharmacy responsibilities:

· Know common use of ALL drugs in the pharmacy

· Prepare oral medications for patients

· Prepare injectable medication for patients

· Identify and label medication appropriately

· Understand compounding pharmacy drug protocol and record keeping

· Package and send medication as requested by clients

· Perform basic inventory management

Other hospital responsibilities:

· Assist with kennel duties

· Assist with intake and release of boarding patient(s)

· Assist with weekend duties and medication administration – maintain excellent record keeping

· Intake and sign packages arriving from FedEx, UPS, USPS and other companies

· Aid in basic inventory management of shipped items

· Fax medical records as requested by clients, other animal hospitals, and rDVM

· Assist with doctor’s call backs

· Assist with reception work: includes answer and screen phone calls, appointments, payment receiving

· Maintain excellent record keeping of all communication between clients, veterinarian, practice manger, and staff

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00 - $20.00 per hour
