Part-Time Accessibility Services Classroom and Office Assistant

Hourly Rate: $16.03

This is a part-time hourly position to assist Accessibility Services in meeting accommodations needs of students both in the classroom and in the office.

Essential Functions

Classroom Assisting Duties

  • Utilize knowledge of disability services to meet student needs in the classroom and in office settings.
  • Provide instructional assistance in the classroom to students with physical and mental disabilities.
  • Assist students to help them master assignments and to reinforce learning concepts presented by instructors.
  • Discuss assigned duties with classroom instructors to coordinate instructional efforts.
  • Write dictated responses on in-class worksheets.
  • Clearly communicate with students regarding classroom work.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries to promote student independence.
  • Learn and utilize various assistive technology devices.

Office Assistant Duties

  • Handle inquiries (walk-in, phone, and email) from students, faculty, staff, administrators, and visitors that come into the Accessibility Services office.
  • Serve as first point of contact for students who self-identify their disability.
  • Provide a general overview of the admissions and assessment process to prospective students.
  • Receive and process confidential medical and psychological records for student files.
  • Maintain accurate records by entering data into the departmental database and the college's student information system.
  • Support Accessibility Services staff.

Exam Proctoring Duties

  • Maintain focus and attention to detail while administering accommodated course exams and proctoring tests.
  • Read written materials for students (must have completed English 101) which may consist of technical or medical terminology.
  • Scribe and/or complete Scantron forms for students who need such assistance.

Additional Responsibilities

  • Work well in a team environment.
  • Provide quality customer services and general office duties as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Knowledge of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. Completion of English 101 or its equivalent with a grade of C or better.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing excellent service to others.
  • Understanding and appreciation of individual differences in ability, personality, and interests; and learning and motivation.
  • Volunteer or work experience providing assistance to others such as coworkers, customers, or patients.
  • Experience developing constructive and cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Must have sufficient writing and mathematical abilities to perform the essential functions of the position, including excellent use of English grammar.
  • Capability of reading at the college level with appropriate vocabulary and pronunciation skills.
