Oregon Health & Science University is Hiring a Postdoctoral Fellow Near Beaverton, OR

The is located 12 miles west of the OHSU main campus, and sits on 162 acres of land featuring forested areas, research and administration buildings, indoor and outdoor animal housing, a pond, and 2-mile perimeter walking path. Our mission is to improve human health and the quality of life through the support of nonhuman primate research programs that advance our knowledge of the causes, preventions, treatments, and cures of debilitating diseases.

The successful candidate for this position will be expected to independently contribute to and actively participate in research projects related to studies in nonhuman primates (NHP) to advance HIV antibody therapeutics and cure research. Training will be required and provided to prepare for participating in NHP lab animal experiments including handling of NHP for passive antibody and vaccine studies. Research will include working with infectious agents, including Simian/Human Immunodeficiency Virus (SHIV) in a BSL-2 containment laboratory. A working knowledge of the use of PET/CT technology and analysis for medical research purposes is desirable, but specific training for supporting these studies will be provided as part of the candidates training. Candidates for this position will be evaluated for laboratory skills and experience that include general immunology-related assays, protein biochemistry, mammalian cell culture, Flow Cytometry, FACS sorting, and molecular biology and cloning techniques. This position will also require assistance with writing manuscripts for publications, project proposals for funding, internal and external research reporting, Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and IACUC regulatory documentation related to laboratory management. Primary research responsibilities will include planning and performing experiments within the guidelines assigned by the principal investigators, data collection and analysis, and developing new technologies in the laboratory.

  • M.D., Ph.D. or D.V.M. in a biological or biochemical discipline
  • Experience in independent laboratory research conception and performance; managing a project in a laboratory setting and working independently to set goals
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively with a variety of diverse staff, co-workers, investigators, and animal care staff
  • Strong organizational skills and meticulous attention to detail with a demonstrated ability to process large numbers of samples accurately
  • Capability of time managements skills in order to work efficiently within the time constraints of the position
  • Manual dexterity and fine motor skills to accurately perform research techniques
  • Ability to communicate effectively in written, email, and oral formats
  • Ability to work independently or in a small group setting and one-on-one with collaborators
  • Independence and competence to perform data management and analysis of research findings, including proficiencies with essential data analysis software described in key responsibilities section
  • Ability to prioritize work demands and to coordinate and document research and experimental protocols with other staff
  • Strong writing and presentation skills for scientific projects and familiarity with the HIV literature desired
