Job Summary:
Full-time Associate Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (Ph.D. or Psy.D.) position.
Under the direction of the Executive Director of CAPS, the Associate Director of CAPS ensures efficient and high-quality delivery, data collection and evaluation of a specific functional area of the department.
The Associate Director of CAPS provides direct clinical services including initial assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, case management, referral, clinical training, and psychoeducational programming to the Northwestern community. This position requires some evening hours and occasional weekend duties.
The Associate Director of Training is responsible for the development and implementation of CAPS training programs, with primary emphasis on the American Psychological Association (APA) accredited doctoral internship. The Associate Director ensures efficient and high-quality delivery, data collection and evaluation of training services, and coordination of the training programs in accordance with guidelines and accreditation standards of the APA and in alignment with departmental and institutional values and priorities. The Associate Director provides administrative supervision to CAPS three doctoral interns and may provide clinical supervision to one or more of them as well. The Associate Director provides administrative consultation and support to CAPS staff involved in the provision of training services (e.g., clinical supervision, didactic seminars, etc.) including to CAPS Sport Psychology team who directly administers a Sport Psychology Post-Doctoral Fellowship program.
The Associate Director of Training is a key member of the CAPS leadership team who leads the department s training committee and participates on a variety of other internal and inter-departmental committees/working groups as assigned. This position may also be called upon to serve as administrator in charge in the absence of the Executive Director and other members of the leadership team.
This position requires some evening hours and occasional weekend duties. After-hours duties typically include 1-2 weeks of on-call duties (as back up to the primary on-call counselor) per quarter. The Associate Director will also generally provide 2-3 evening or weekend community-based intervention events per quarter.
Pay: The expected salary range for this position is $108,000 to $115,000 with additional consideration for candidates with substantial previous experience and/or expertise.
Department Overview:
CAPS is a unit within the Division of Student Affairs at NU and is highly utilized by students and other campus community members seeking consultation. CAPS has offices on both the Evanston and Chicago campuses. NU has a total student population of approximately 21,000 students across both campuses, with approximately 18,500 of these students attending classes in the Evanston campus. The Chicago office serves primarily graduate and professional students while Evanston office serves both undergraduate and graduate students. In addition to our clinical services, CAPS reaches over 10,000 NU community members through outreach and educational programming on both campuses. CAPS also has a training program, including an APA-accredited Doctoral Internship in Psychology at our Evanston office and a Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Sport Psychology. CAPS is a learning organization, in that our strategic planning, priority setting, clinical services, and professional development are informed by local data collection as well as benchmarking with national trends and peer institutions. Specific Responsibilities:
Administrative/Managerial

• Provides culturally grounded administration of CAPS training programs.
• Develops, implements, and maintains training policies and procedures, training data analysis and preparation of related reports for program evaluation.
• Chairs a training committee, consisting of various CAPS professional staff.
• Maintains training webpages and other publicity for training.
• Represents and advocates for the training program and CAPS to professional organizations such as APA, ACCTA, and APPIC, as well as to local and regional organizations.
• Coordinates selection of all trainees, trainee orientation, trainee evaluations, and supervisor selection.
• Ensures that the doctoral internship operates in compliance with professional standards and requirements to maintain accreditation by the American Psychological Association.
• Works with other administrators in CAPS to coordinate parallel activities involving trainees.
• Plans and implements annual trainee onboarding and offboarding processes.
• Serves as a member of the CAPS Leadership Team.
• Serves as departmental administrator in charge in the absence of the Executive Director and Director of Clinical Services.
• Provides direct administrative supervision to doctoral interns.
• Coordinates ongoing evaluation of trainee performance.
• Ensures timely communications regarding the performance evaluations of doctoral interns with their academic programs.
• Implements policies and practices to advance an equitable, inclusive work environment and counter racism, sexism, and other forms of institutional bias.
• Engages in on-going self-reflection and continues to advance their knowledge and skills related to diversity, equity and inclusion.

Clinical Services

• Provides culturally sensitive direct services including initial assessment, individual and group psychotherapy, crisis intervention, case management, and referral.
• Assumes after hours on-call responsibilities as consultant to first-level on-call staff.
• Maintains timely clinical records and necessary statistics of therapeutic and other client contacts.
• Consults with psychiatrists in conjunction with prescribing and monitoring psychotropic medication for psychotherapy clients.
• Serves as in-house consultant regarding clinical training issues for CAPS staff.
• Consults with parents, physicians, faculty, academic deans, residence life staff, off-campus counseling services, other campus offices and students when appropriate and with appropriate authorization to provide quality care to students.
• Facilitates referrals to off-campus clinical services when appropriate.

Training

• In addition to the training activities outlined in the Administrative/Managerial section:
• Participates in the CAPS training program(s), which may include providing clinical supervision, facilitating didactic seminars, being available for clinical consultation to trainees, and chairing the Training Committee.
• Provides feedback to other members of the leadership team regarding how their program areas are impacting trainees.

Community-Based Intervention Programming

• Conducts outreach as requested including staff/faculty trainings, orientation sessions for new students and parents, workshop presentations and emergency support services to the campus and community.
• Serves as liaison to other campus unit(s) or academic programs.

Other Duties

• Participates in Student Affairs and other University committees as assigned by the Executive Director.
• Provides consultation and assistance to units, academic departments, and individuals regarding clinical service systems, emergency services, and preventive services.
• Attends and participates in regular CAPS staff meetings, case conferences, and in-service/professional development training.
• Participates in local and national organizations relevant to job title and duties.
• Engages in continuing education necessary to maintain state and national credentials and licenses as required by job description and duties.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Candidate must hold a Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical or Counseling Psychology.
• Currently licensed or eligible to be licensed as psychologist by the State of Illinois (i.e., at time of application, must have completed all licensure requirements including successfully passing any examinations and completing any clinical supervision hours required for licensure by the State of Illinois). Illinois license must be obtained no later than 12 months after hire date.
• Minimum of three years (post-licensure) professional experience as a Psychologist.
• Two years of experience as an active participant as a member of the training staff for doctoral internship program.
• One year experience in the provision of clinical training and supervision of psychology trainees.
