SummaryResponsible for accurately obtaining blood specimens via venipuncture or capillary collection procedures with minimum patient discomfort. Ensures specimen integrity by adhering to the laboratory’s procedures for specimen collection, handling, and processing. Verifies documentation and that patients meet collection and test preparation criteria. Instructs patients, as required, in the collection and handling of urine and other specimens. Sorts and transports specimens, requests and results to appropriate destinations. Provides care to patients whose ages range from infant to geriatric.

High School Graduate
Prefer candidates who have one year phlebotomy experience and have successfully completed an accredited Phlebotomy Program.
PBT(ASCP), or equivalent Certification and/or Louisiana State Laboratory Assistant License is required.

ResponsibilitiesDUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Indicates duties for phlebotomists in outpatient settings.
  • Performs venipunctures, heel‑sticks, and/or finger sticks as ordered according to established standards and practices/procedures using proper techniques and equipment. Adheres to Laboratory limits on number of attempts and communicate issues appropriately to Laboratory and Nursing staff.
  • ** Transcribes patient orders and performs other computer and non-computer related tasks necessary for outpatient specimen collection.
  • Identifies, labels, and dispatches specimens received/collected. Centrifuges specimens, as needed, per procedure.
  • Provides direct patient care in a caring, friendly, and professional manner.
  • Follows principles of asepsis and antisepsis in performing duties.
  • Assures equipment is clean and functioning properly. (Scanners, printers, pagers, lights, etc.).
  • Dispatches specimens to appropriate department.
  • Ensures supplies are within acceptable expiration dates immediately discarding those not meeting requirements.
  • Receives work assignments and completes them as assigned in a timely manner.
  • Plans, organizes, and prioritizes work duties.
  • ** Performs EKG’s as ordered following standard hospital procedure.
  • ** Correctly obtain adequate throat, nares and NP specimens as necessary for test(s) ordered. Processes specimens as required to ensure specimen stability.
  • ** Performs waived testing as needed/ordered.
  • ** Notifies Surgery Nurse when unable to obtain specimens for surgery patients.
  • Ensures adequate phlebotomy supplies are available and notifies Supervisor when necessary to order. Stocks supply deliveries.
  • ** Ensures adequate supply of clean linens and other housekeeping supplies.
  • Generates and reviews pending logs resolving issues as needed. Performs adequate handoff of information to incoming shift.
  • Maintains appropriate logs and required records.
  • Answers phones and take messages.
  • Assists in orientation and training of new employees.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and department meetings.
  • Assists on special projects as needed.
  • Maintains confidentiality in accordance with hospital policies/procedures and HIPAA regulations.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. This may include rotation to other shifts including weekends and holidays for inpatient phlebotomists.
  • Outpatient phlebotomists may be required to rotate to weekend shifts.
  • Follows North Oaks Health System’s Compliance Programs and Federal and State Regulatory guidelines.
  • Performs all duties in a safe manner and adheres to North Oaks Health System’s safety policies and procedures.
