Our staff work hard to close opportunity gaps for our scholars, and the data speaks for itself: In 2023, on the rigorous Illinois Assessment of Readiness, GLA had the highest percentage of students reaching proficiency in ELA and Math of all elementary schools in Hyde Park, Woodlawn, South Shore, and South Chicago.

We are proud of our growth and achievement, but we have our sights set even higher for the 2024-25 school year, and we need your help to reach our goals. We are seeking a high-capacity, humble, and growth-oriented Dean of Instruction - Math to support teachers’ growth, with a special focus on school wide math instruction.

Job Overview*
Reporting directly to the Assistant Principal, the Dean of Instruction - Math is a member of the School Leadership Team (SLT) and works closely with the Instructional Leadership Team (ILT) and Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) Team. The Dean of Instruction - Math is in a key leadership position for all math and science teachers in grades K-8, with specific responsibilities outlined below. This is a year-round position.

Key Job Responsibilities*

  • Develops and implements a clear vision for instructional excellence in math and science classes (K-8)
  • Analyzes and selects rigorous, Common Core Standard-aligned curriculum; updates as needed
  • Plans and leads high-quality professional development aligned to the vision of excellence
  • Supervises and coaches portfolio of teachers to reach proficiency on GLA’s teaching rubric, including metrics aligned to both rigorous instruction and classroom culture
  • Leads data analysis and action planning for K-8 math, including analyzing student growth and achievement and supporting teachers with data-driven instruction
  • Works with the SLT and ILT to develop, implement and maintain every detail of the school’s systems and procedures, including homework, discipline, transitions, entrance and exit, community celebrations, morning meetings, and classroom culture so that GLA is structured and joyful
  • Works with the MTSS team to analyze student progress and drive implementation of high-quality intervention plans
  • Leads all math and science programming in the school, including organizing interim assessments, math initiatives, incentive systems, and school-wide academic events
  • Holds staff accountable to results, including holding difficult conversations that drive learning and change
  • Creates daily coverage plans and supports school coverage needs in the absence of teachers

Ideal Qualifications*

  • At least four years of teaching experience, preferably in a low-income school, with a track record of student success
  • Experienced teacher coach with track record of growing instructors in lesson planning, curriculum development, data analysis, classroom management, and lesson execution
  • Deep knowledge of and enthusiasm for the teacher “taxonomies” per Teach Like a Champion (TLAC) and for elementary and middle school math and science curricula
  • Strong communicator and relationship builder with adults, including all staff, student families, and community partners
  • Demonstrated leadership skills - highly organized and efficient, strategic, empathetic, good communicator, adaptable, solution and execution-oriented, self-motivated, self-aware, and humble
  • Flexible and team-oriented; willing to work with the admin team to support in areas of need in the school
  • Prioritizes student achievement as highest goal
  • Committed to serving students of color on the South Side of Chicago

Minimum Qualifications*

  • Bachelor’s degree is required
  • Some teaching experience
  • Some experience coaching teachers
  • Eligibility to work in the United States on a full-time basis
  • Valid IL Professional Educator License (PEL) preferred, but not required
