New York Medical College is Hiring a Student Academic Excellence Specialist Near Valhalla, NY

Overview:

Under the guidance of the Director of the Office of Student Academic Support, the Student Academic Excellence Specialist (SAE Specialist) is responsible for providing academic support for students enrolled in NYMC non-clinical graduate programs and assisting with daily administrative operations within the Office of Academic Excellence (OAE). The SAE Specialist will meet with and provide continued academic support outreach to assigned student populations and meet with students experiencing academic challenges, whether referred by faculty or self-identified; provide orientation presentations and study strategy workshops as needed; have oversight of assigned Peer Learning Partners (tutors); and maintain academic support engagement data. In addition to providing academic support the SAE Specialist will assist with administrative duties within the Office of Academic Excellence which will include checking the OAE email, maintaining social media content, assisting with event administration/setup, onboarding tutors, maintaining integrity of data and services, and other administrative duties.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide one-on-one academic support to students in NYMC non-clinical graduate programs.
  • Collaborate with the academic support team and other stakeholders to create, compile, and maintain academic support/study resources for SOM students.
  • Attend meetings with faculty and administrators to discuss the academic performance of students
  • Co-manage peer-to-peer learning program that supports NYMC non-clinical programs. Co-responsibilities include recruitment, training, management, and assessment of PLPs who serve NYMC non-clinical students.
  • Provide continued academic excellence outreach, support, and triage to additional student support services.
  • Identify and longitudinally track the performance of students who may be struggling academically. This includes enhancing processes/programs for early identification of at-risk students to help create proactive study plans and interventions.
  • Assist the director with implementation of strategies and programming as needed.
  • Perform administrative duties which include managing the OAE email inbox; maintaining the OAE social media, including website updates; assisting with OAE event setup, distributing vouchers for practice tests to students, maintaining events on multiple calendar systems, participating in PLP onboarding, administration of WC Online PLP management system, managing shared office files; sharing responsibilities of office management, and creating Qualtrics surveys as needed.
  • Serve as backup for PLP payroll.
  • Other administrative duties as needed and directed by the senior Academic Excellence Specialist.
Qualifications:

Education requirement: Masters or Masters en route with 3-5 years of higher education or relevant experience required. Degrees including but not limited to MA/MS in Education, English/writing, counseling, health science/STEM related, psychology, social work, counseling, etc.

Technical/computer skills:

  • Must be proficient with Excel, Outlook, and other Microsoft Office programs.
  • Experience with Banner a plus, but not required.
  • Experience with programs related to social media content such as graphic design, multi-media, Adobe Creative Suite or similar, digital content creation, and video editing is helpful.

Prior experience:

  • Experience in a higher education/post-graduate education setting.
  • Experience in academic support and/or teaching in higher education.
  • Experience in undergraduate/graduate health science education.
  • Demonstrated emotional intelligence, the ability to communicate and work as part of a team, relate well with students and colleagues, and demonstrate discretion and sound judgment when handling confidential issues.
  • Demonstrated cultural competence and willingness to empathize with students experiencing challenges.
  • Understanding and ability to comply with FERPA and HIPAA regulations.
  • The person must be a self-starter with excellent organizational skills who is ready to take instructions, work in a fast-paced environment, and meet regular deadlines.
  • The ability to speak comfortably with the team, large groups, and one-on-one with students.
  • Willingness toward professional development.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
