Position Summary: TheMechanical and Industrial Engineering Department at the New Jersey Institute ofTechnology (NJIT) invites applications for a tenure-track position at theAssistant/Associate or Full Professor level in the areas of Artificial Intelligence/DataScience/Machine Learning as appliedto Mechanical Engineering.
Theapplications of AI, Big Data, and Machine Learning techniques to MechanicalEngineering include, but are not limited to the following areas:
Robotics, automation and control. Developmentof novel robotics; mechanisms and actuators. Healthcare, rehabilitation andassistive robotics.
Design and Manufacturing. Smart sustainable manufacturing and design, additivemanufacturing, generative design.
Mechanics of materials. Theoretical, computational, or experimentalapproaches applied to novel materials such as bioinspired materials; materialsused in energy storage/conversion systems.
Thermo-fluids mechanics. Application of thermal-fluids to biological systems or bio-inspired systems;environmental systems. complex fluids and thermal systems for energy systems,multiphase systems with phase change.
With28 tenured/tenure-track faculty, the NJIT MIE Department is an advancedresearch-active department. Research thrust areas include Biomechanics,computational fluid mechanics, biomedical devices, robotics, controls andautomation, smart materials, mechanics of complex materials, advanced energysystems, thermal-fluid systems, climate modeling, computer aided design,machine learning, supply chain and operations research. MIE research projectsare funded by NSF, other federal agencies, NJ state, industry and privatefoundations. The department offers bachelor, master and doctoral programs inboth Mechanical and Industrial Engineering serving about 1300 students.
Essential Functions: Candidatesare expected to conduct and advance scholarly research in pertinent areas andbe able to secure external research funding from federal and state agencies andfrom industry. Candidates are also expected to teach undergraduate and graduatelevel courses in mechanical engineering as well as provide service to theprogram, department, university, and profession.
Prerequisite Qualifications: - Applicantsare expected to have a doctorate (Ph.D. or D.Sc.) in mechanical engineering, orclosely related field.
- Applicants should have evidence of high-qualityscholarly achievements that demonstrates independent research, and a commitmentto excellence in undergraduate and graduate education.
- Industry experience andthe ability to obtain professional licensure are desirable.
- Candidates musthave the potential to establish an externally funded research program in theirarea of expertise.
- Atthe university's discretion, the education and experience prerequisites may beexempted where the candidate can demonstrate to the satisfaction of theuniversity, an equivalent combination of education and experience specificallypreparing the candidate for success in the position.
