Position Summary
The Director, Supply Chain Sourcing and Procurement will be responsible for developing and executing strategies to source raw materials, equipment, and services essential for the manufacturing of cell therapy products. This individual will lead the cell therapy procurement function, ensuring the timely and cost-effective acquisition of high-quality materials while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
This position could be located in Gaithersburg, MD, New York City, NY, Waltham, MA, South San Francisco, CA, or Santa Monica, CA.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
  • Develop and implement phase-appropriate strategic sourcing plans to secure reliable and cost-effective suppliers for raw materials, reagents, consumables, equipment, and services required for cell therapy manufacturing. Base strategies on the risk profiles of the materials and suppliers.
  • Establish and maintain strong relationships with suppliers, negotiating contracts, pricing, terms, and value-added services to optimize value, innovation, quality, reliability, and compliance. Operational and strategic management strategies are differentiated by supplier segmentation.
  • Oversee the procurement process from requisition to delivery, ensuring efficient and timely purchasing activities to ensure uninterrupted manufacturing for patients and process development, while adhering to budgetary constraints and regulatory standards. Scope includes GMP direct materials for manufacturing and development and indirect services for the company.
  • Identify potential risks within the supply chain and develop mitigation strategies to ensure continuity of supply and minimize disruptions to manufacturing operations.
  • Collaborate closely with Quality Assurance and Regulatory Affairs teams to ensure that all sourced materials and suppliers meet regulatory requirements and adhere to quality standards, including Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).
  • Continuously evaluate procurement processes and supplier performance to identify opportunities for cost savings and process improvements without compromising quality or compliance.
  • Collaborate effectively with internal stakeholders, including Manufacturing, Process Development, Quality Assurance, Quality Control, and Finance, to align sourcing and procurement activities with organizational goals and objectives.
Supervisory Responsibilities
  • Support leadership and change management of a growing supply chain organization. Other responsibilities as needed.
  • Build and lead a high-performing procurement team, providing guidance, mentorship, and professional development opportunities to drive individual and collective success.
Required Skills/Abilities
  • Proven track record of successfully leading sourcing and procurement initiatives, including supplier selection, negotiation, and contract management.
  • Strong understanding of regulatory requirements, quality standards, and compliance frameworks relevant to cell therapy manufacturing, such as GMP, GCP, and ISO.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, with the ability to effectively prioritize and manage multiple projects and deadlines.
  • Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, with experience leading and developing high-performing teams in a fast-paced and dynamic environment.
  • Proficiency in procurement software and systems, such as ERP systems, e-procurement tools, and supplier management platforms.
  • Develop solutions to a wide range of complex problems which require a high degree of ingenuity, creativity, and innovativeness. Challenges are unique and solutions may serve as precedent for future decisions.
  • Works under consultative direction toward long-range goals and objectives. Assignments are self-initiated with almost no direct supervision.
  • Serves as consultant and external spokesperson for the organization on significant matters relating to policies, programs, capabilities, and long- range goals and objectives.
  • Provides guidance to team members based on organizational goals and company policy. Work is reviewed in terms of meeting the organization's objectives and schedules.
  • Establishes operating policies and procedures that affect subordinate organizational units. Interprets, executes, and recommends modifications to organizational policies.
Education and Experience:
  • A minimum of twelve (12) years with BS/BA, or minimum of ten (10) years with MS/MA or MBA, or a minimum of eight (8) years with PhD.
  • Degree in Business, Supply Chain Management, Engineering, or a related field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in strategic sourcing, procurement, and supply chain management, preferably in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with specific experience in cell therapy highly desirable.
  • Experience in CMC, process development, and/or manufacturing preferred.

The anticipated salary range for candidates who will work in Santa Monica, CA is $170,000 to $201,000. The final salary offered to a successful candidate will be dependent on several factors that may include but are not limited to the type and length of experience within the job type and length of experience within the industry, education, etc.
