Murfreesboro Medical Clinic is Hiring a Vascular Surgery-Circulator RN/PRN Near Murfreesboro, TN

Department: Vascular

Job Title: Circulator RN

Status: Full time

Hours: Variable

Reports to: Team Leader/Vascular Manager

Purpose of job: Provide support to surgeons performing operations/procedures in a sterile environment. Acts as an advocate for the patient and maintains safety, confidentiality and dignity of the patient at all times. Perform multiple tasks concurrently.

Dress Code:

Scrub clothes, name tag, shoe covers, and hair bonnet. Regular scrub jacket will be worn outside the department. An impervious jacket, protective eyewear, mask, and gloves shall be worn when there is a possibility of coming in contact with blood and/or body fluids.

Qualifications:

* Must be a graduate from an accredited school of nursing with a current Tennessee nursing license

* Basic Life Support certified; ACLS & PALS recommended.

* Previous experience in an OR setting (1 year minimum)

* Must be in overall good health with satisfactory hearing and eyesight; must be able to bend reach and lift 50 lbs. using good body mechanics. (able to pass pre-employment physical)

* Knowledge of OSHA guidelines

* Must be able to work forty (40) hours per week and overtime as deemed necessary by the supervisor

* Must be self-motivated, professional and maintain a positive attitude

* Must have good verbal and written communication skills

Essential Functions:

* Ability to meet or exceed patient, doctor and staff expectations with quality service

* Perform other duties as assigned by Surgery Center Coordinator

* Must be able to stand for several hours; must be able to bend and reach; must be able to lift up to 50 pounds using good body mechanics

* Must be able to circulate all types of cases performed at the SurgiCenter and willing to learn to scrub and assist all types of cases.

* Assists team members in preparing the operating room for surgery:

* damp dusts all flat surfaces, light fixtures, and room furniture

* brings case cart into the room

* Opens necessary supplies using sterile technique

* Checks surgeon's preference card to insure correct instruments, supplies, and equipment are in the room

* Connects scavenger hose from the anesthesia machine to the evacuation outlet

* Assists in the terminal cleaning of the operating room between cases and at the end of the day. This includes proper disposal of used linen, gloves, instruments, equipment and trash.

* Picks cases for the next day

* Assists with other tasks in support of the day-to-day operation of the surgery center. This may include clerical or non-nursing duties. (i.e. stocking of supplies, covering the front desk, washing instruments, etc.)

* May be required to relieve staff in the OR or other areas outside the OR for lunch, breaks or in case of a personnel shortage.

* Assumes the role of patient advocate by protecting the patients' rights, privacy and dignity.

* Follows employee handbook guidelines in regard to sick time, vacation and dress code.

* Maintains a safe, clean, environment for the patient, self, and co-workers.

* Promotes open communication with the patient, the patient's family members and other pertinent health professionals regarding the care of the patient.

* Attends in-service programs.

Performance Criteria:

* Ability to work with a team approach toward providing quality of patient care

* Ability to respond to the needs of the department and the patient in a busy environment

* Ability to follow instructions given by physicians and supervisor

Circulating Nurse Duties:

* Ultimately in charge of the room

* Responsible for checking and turning on the suction

* Responsible for checking the patients' armband and chart . Confirms a signed operative permit is present before taking patient to the OR.

* Responsible and documents correct patient, site and surgery. Performs a "time out" in the operative suite prior to the first incision when the entire OR team is present (anesthesia, surgeon and scrub staff).

* Accurately and neatly documents on the operative record pertinent information

* Responsible for counts of sponges, sharps, and instrument counts

* Transports patient from the pre-op area to the operating room

* Assists with safe transfer of the patient from the stretcher onto the operating table

* Responsible for assuring that the patient is properly positioned

* Assists anesthesia as needed/requested

* Connects grounding pad to the cautery unit

* Preps patient's operative site

* Ties gown of surgeon and assistant

* Connects and operates other necessary equipment required to perform the procedure

* Opens additional needed supplies during surgical procedure

* Assists with securing the surgical dressing

* Assists with safe transfer of patient from the operating table onto the stretcher and accompanies patient to the Recovery Room

* Stays with the patient until report is given to the Recovery Room Nurse. (note: if no one is available to receive the patient, the circulating nurse is to initiate the recovery procedure/)

* Properly cares for any specimens obtained for pathological studies

* For local cases, the circulating nurse if responsible for monitoring and documenting the patient's vital signs, administered amounts of medication given by surgeon

* Maintains communication with pre-op nurses as to the progress of the surgical procedure

Scrub Nurse Duties:

* Performs surgical hand scrub

* Sets up, maintains and protects the sterile field, including the back table, mayo stand, and operative field

* Gowns and gloves the surgeon

* Assists the surgeon with draping the patient

* Anticipates and passes instrument to the surgeon

* Responsible for counting sponges and sharps with the circulator or assistant prior to the case and again with circulator during and at the end of the case

* Responsible for sorting soiled instruments. This includes separation of sharp instruments into individual containers to prevent injury and isolation of delicate items such as the fiber optic light cords and telescopes to prevent damage

* Transports covered soiled instruments to the dirty instrument room on a utility cart

* Responsible for washing and returning all fiber-optic light cords and scopes

* Assists with transfer of the patient from the operating table to the stretcher

* Stays in the operating room until the patient leaves
