Summary

Position Highlights:

The Tobacco Treatment Specialist- Community ("TTS - C") provides tobacco education and delivers evidence-based smoking cessation interventions to community members who currently use or have a history of tobacco use. Specific duties of the TTS-C include:

  • Oversee the development of the treatment plan for tobacco dependent individuals to facilitate smoking cessation, and ultimately reduce the tobacco burden.
  • Create a framework to streamline processes to ensure consistency when delivering evidence-based tobacco treatment throughout Moffitt’s 23-county catchment area.
  • Increase reach of tobacco cessation resources and support to medically underserved populations to maximize community impact.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team members for process improvement planning.
  • Work with existing and new community partners to enhance tobacco outreach and education efforts to improve treatment access (both counseling and nicotine replacement therapy).
  • Deliver education regarding lung cancer screening strategies to those with a history of tobacco use and work closely with Moffit team members to provide access to available services.
  • Create a comprehensive program evaluation plan that include smoking outcome data and tracking of outreach and educational efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct community outreach and education regarding evidence-based medications and nicotine replacement therapy in diverse communities; in collaboration with COEE staff.
  • Provide evidence-based smoking cessation interventions (including counseling and emotional support) to tobacco dependent individuals of underserved populations based on their tobacco use history and current tobacco status as assessed using validated measures.
  • Connect community members who are using tobacco cessation services to resources to prevent tobacco relapse, including Moffitt resources.
  • Advise Moffitt’s lung cancer screening program and mobile screening efforts as to where to deploy services to ensure reach to underserved populations.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and information concerning tobacco treatment to advise internal and external stakeholders and train COEE outreach and education team members.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to identify strategic solutions to improve performance of the program and align efforts with ongoing cancer screening education and services to be cost effective.
  • Participate in research activities to improve health outcomes in Moffitt’s 23-county catchment area related to tobacco and other cancer prevention behaviors.
  • Develop and track metrics to evaluate reach of tobacco cessation services including but not limited to the number of individuals who receive support/resources for quitting smoking.

Credentials and Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Social Work, Public Health, Nursing, or other human services related field required; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Two (2) years' experience required in counseling, substance addictions, and/or behavior change intervention in a health care setting.
  • Experience disseminating evidence-based tobacco treatment.
  • Experience engaging with community members of diverse backgrounds and organizations to plan and implement education and programming.
  • Experience in planning, coordinating, and evaluating programs for diverse populations.
  • Familiarity with principles of adult learning.
  • Demonstrates advanced cognitive capabilities in the evaluation, diagnosis and planning of treatment for tobacco dependent individuals.

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Preferred experience in planning, coordinating, and evaluating programs focused on tobacco cessation and/or cancer prevention education.
  • Bilingual oral and written skills in English and Spanish.
  • Certified Tobacco Treatment Specialist.
