Under the supervision of the Vice President, Enterprise Analytics, Mass General Brigham is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Director of Enterprise Clinical Data Science to lead the development of a specialized team of data scientists. The Senior Director will be responsible for harnessing the power of data to create predictive and prescriptive models that offer valuable insights into operational efficiency, reduce clinical burden, and enhance the overall provider and patient experience within Mass General Brigham.You will work directly with the management team of Enterprise Analytics, which is a our centralized analytics department within our MGB Digital department, who is charged with providing data-driven insights to senior leadership of our hospital system (including clinical chiefs and chairs), and departmental directors, while coordinating with data analysts and front-line clinicians. This includes answering clinical questions by selecting, querying, and analyzing several sources of clinical and administrative data; analyzing themes in large, free text databases; real-time predictive modeling; and biostatistical consultation for quality and safety.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

Management and Strategy

1.Recruit, hire, lead, mentor, and manage a team of up to 12 accomplished data science professionals, recognized as leaders in their respective domains, fostering their growth, development, and collaboration.

2.Cultivate a high-performing team environment, leveraging the expertise and diverse skill sets of individual team members to drive innovation and deliver transformative solutions.

3.Empower and guide the data science team to explore novel methodologies, technologies, and approaches, encouraging continuous learning and pushing the boundaries of analytics within Mass General Brigham.

4.Provide leadership in the development and implementation of solutions involving data science and digital health, to support Mass General Brigham’s missions in delivering highest value care (aligned with hospital goals around quality, safety, experience and equity) and advancing operational efficiency.

5.Drive the development and implementation of advanced analytics and machine learning techniques to analyze complex healthcare data, including electronic health records, administrative claims, and other relevant sources.

6.Oversee the design, development, and deployment of models that can forecast clinical outcomes, optimize resource allocation, streamline operational workflows, and improve patient outcomes.

7.Align data science initiatives with the strategic objectives and long-term vision of Mass General Brigham, ensuring that predictive and prescriptive models contribute directly to organizational goals.

8.Integrate data science applications seamlessly into the strategic planning process, providing analytical insights that inform decision-making and drive innovation across the organization.

9.Collaborate closely with senior leadership to embed data science methodologies into strategic discussions, demonstrating how analytics can enhance operational efficiency, patient outcomes, and overall organizational success.

10.Drive the integration of data science applications into existing business processes, fostering a culture of data-driven decision-making and promoting the use of predictive models to guide strategic actions.

11.Leverage data science to identify opportunities for transformative change within Mass General Brigham, providing actionable insights that lead to the optimization of patient care pathways, resource allocation, and operational workflows.

12.Provide strategic guidance and thought leadership on the use of data science methodologies and technologies to address healthcare challenges and achieve organizational objectives.

13.Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and collaboration within the enterprise data science team.

14.Consult with administrative and clinical leadership to understand problems and goals, understand business value, and translate into business opportunities. Collaboratively work with stakeholders to ask the appropriate questions, define requirements, and identify actions to take.

15.Advance the adoption and use of analytics approaches, from basic reporting to predictive and prescriptive analytics, by creating relationships with hospital leaders and educating them on the value and impact of the team’s work.

16.Lead deep mining of robust Mass General Brigham (MGB) datasets to identify insights into ways to improve operations and patient care.

17.Develop and/or use advanced algorithms and statistical predictive models and determine analytical approaches and modeling techniques to evaluate scenarios and potential future outcomes.

18.Contribute to the Mass General Brigham’s strategies around data science enablement, including efforts focused on upskilling the organization’s data and analytics workforce.

19.Build relationships with key individuals involved in data, analytics and reporting throughout the MGB system. Represent and advocate for MGB data science and digital health needs to these individuals. Identify areas of collaboration when working towards common goals.

20.Oversees recruitment, interviewing, compensation, benefits, orientation, training, professional development, performance improvement, and evaluation of all Data Science and Analytics staff.

a.Prioritize assignments and identify and help to overcome barriers to ensure successful and timely completion of all work. Ensure that the work is high-quality and the staff meet the department’s service standards.

b.Determine staff promotion and compensation levels and determine equity within the job market to ensure competitiveness including the creation of job descriptions as well as working with Human Resources and Compensation to determine grades for new positions, annual rates of pay for new hires, increases for employees who are promoted, and equity increases.

c.Serve as the primary resource for all human resources issues and facilitates resolution of conflicts that emerge between the team and clinical and operational groups.

d.Create a working environment that supports the ongoing professional growth and development of all staff, high morale, and optimal job satisfaction, including but not limited to the implementation of regular staff meetings, annual departmental retreats, continuing education, and training activities

Cross-Collaboration and Influence and Vendor Management

1.Partner with MGB Digital Platform and data engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of data sources and access to high-quality, reliable data for analysis.

2.Collaborate with the appropriate teams at MGB to initiate and guide and operationalize innovative solutions (including real-time solutions) that involve advanced analytics and digital health.

3.Liaise with MGB eCare and Epic as necessary to research and implement analytic solutions to meet MGB needs.

4.Influence and guide decision-making processes across multiple teams by effectively communicating the potential impact and benefits of aligning their strategies with data-driven insights and recommendations.

5.Develop and maintain strong working relationships with key stakeholders within clinical and administrative platform teams, leveraging these relationships to drive consensus and alignment on data science initiatives.

6.Champion a collaborative culture of shared goals and mutual support across teams, breaking down silos and fostering an environment where data science is seen as an enabler for achieving common organizational objectives.

7.Partner with the MGB Enterprise Analytics teams to identify and implement cutting-edge technological solutions to MGB’s data, analysis and reporting needs, making sure that MGB continues to leverage new technologies to improve its ability to turn data into action.

8.Disseminate findings from scientific evaluations of MGB data and processes and present them at prestigious national and international conferences and symposia.

9.Identify and evaluate potential external vendors, establishing strategic partnerships with those offering specialized expertise or technologies that complement the data science initiatives at Mass General Brigham.

10.Collaborate with external vendors to explore innovative solutions, tools, or services that can augment the capabilities of the internal data science team, leveraging their expertise to enhance analytical methodologies or technological advancements.

11.Act as a liaison between Mass General Brigham and external vendors, ensuring clear communication, alignment of goals, and the effective integration of vendor solutions or services into ongoing data science projects.

12.Negotiate and manage vendor contracts, ensuring compliance with organizational policies, regulatory requirements, and budgetary considerations, while also maximizing the value derived from vendor partnerships.

13.Coordinate vendor-led training sessions or workshops to upskill the internal data science team, facilitating knowledge transfer and fostering a culture of continuous learning and innovation.

14.Monitor and assess the performance and outcomes of vendor engagements, conducting regular reviews to ensure that vendor solutions align with the organization's strategic objectives and deliver expected results.

Qualifications:

Qualifications:

1.Master’s degree or higher in informatics, computer science, statistics, public health, or related fields required

2.Clinical degree (e.g., MD, PA, RN, Pharmacist, etc.) is strongly preferred

3.At least ten years of experience with data analytics required, experience with healthcare data required

4.Epic Clarity certification preferred, but not required

5.Board Certification in Clinical Informatics preferred, but not required
