Work hours take place during our standard shop hours, between 10am-4pm, M-F. Some accommodations for class conflicts may be made during these hours. Some weekend work hours are often required in any single semester; these weekend work calls are typically scheduled well in advance.

Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary:

Student workers construct and install all theatrical scenic, lighting, and audio/visual elements for the Theatre Department's productions in the Mullen Center; often with minimal supervision from the technical director. Workers may also support department functions, such as class and graduate thesis projects, faculty workshops, and visiting productions associated with Villanova Theatre and the Visual Art department. Students may also work on select building improvement and tool and hardware organization projects.

Specific duties can include:

* loading and unloading building materials;

* operating a variety of stationary and hand-held cutting tools (including but not limited to the table saw, miter saw, drill press, band saw, router, circular saw, palm and belt sander, jig saw, pneumatic staple and nail tools, cordless drill and impact driver, and a variety of smaller hand tools);

* working at height on ladders, in a personal genie lift, or on scaffolding;

* sweeping and cleaning;

* hanging, cabling, patching & troubleshooting, and/or focusing theatrical lighting equipment;

* programming theatrical lighting and audio control boards;

* installing and troubleshooting Clearcom communication headsets;

* reading and interpreting construction shop drawings and/or written and verbal instructions from supervisors or other supervising student

Requirements:

Applicants should be comfortable lifting & carrying up to 40lbs, be comfortable climbing ladders & scaffolds, using - or learning to use - a wide variety of woodworking and construction power tools and hand tools, have some understanding of fundamental geometry and basic math skills, as well as receive verbal and/or written instructions, sometimes in the form of shop construction drawings.

Candidates should enjoy working with others in a group setting and be open to new experiences and learning new skills.

Preference may be given to applicants who have a valid driver's license with a good driving record and no traffic violations.

Additional Information:

* A level of creativity, thinking critically, resourcefulness, and common sense is required and can vary greatly depending on a production's specific design.

* While specific training can be and is always provided, students are expected to operate somewhat autonomously rather quickly after receiving said training.

* On a daily basis, student workers work in groups with their peers and, often, supervise each other as well.

Physical Demands Summary:

* Work is often of a physical nature and student workers are on their feet for most work calls; regular exposure to standard building materials (such as wood, engineered wood products, foam, plastics, steel, wood & white glue, latex paints, joint compound, etc.); work is most often performed in dusty and/or noisy environments wherein power tools are often running; hands and clothing may become dirty or splattered w/ paint, glue, etc.

* Personal Protection Equipment (i.e., safety glasses, earplugs, and/or dust masks) is encouraged, required, and provided.

* Applicants should be comfortable lifting & carrying up to 40lbs, be comfortable climbing ladders & scaffolds, using - or learning to use - a wide variety of woodworking and construction power tools and hand tools.

Wage Rate: 11.25/hour
