Primary Duties: * Take responsibility for developing models, performing analysis and producing algorithms for the control and path estimation of the NAMRU-D Disorientation Research Device * Define, simulate, and validate solutions which support system requirements for dynamic vehicle control system implementations. * Influence mechanical, electrical designs, and software implementation. * Play a role in defining processes and methods to improve existing control system designs. * Work as part of a diverse team of professionals supporting component development and subsystem and vehicle integration * Develop advanced control algorithms for vehicle systems including control of 3-phase Brushless DC (BLDC) electric motors, positional servos motors while leveraging a suite of dynamic sensors for feedback. * Perform simulation and analysis of electric systems to optimize performance by ensuring control loop stability * Conduct algorithm tuning and calibration by testing using a hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) dynamometer and in relevant environments * Assist in characterization efforts to meet system requirements and enhance system efficiency * Simulate, design, validate and test various control implementations. * Communicate control systems concepts both verbally and visually. * Develop project test plans and test procedures, provide test planning support, and assist in the execution of testing * Support development of new and existing system design standards to meet current and future specifications * Support multiple programs maintaining both project schedules and milestones. * Apply control systems engineering theories, concepts, and techniques to support research protocols in coordination with researchers, principal investigators, and engineering staff. * Apply control systems engineering theories, concepts, and techniques to support the operation of research devices, simulating environmental conditions of interest (e.g., dynamic acceleration exposures) in coordination with researchers, principal investigators, and engineering staff. * Apply control systems engineering theories, concepts, and techniques to the analysis of data sets to support research data analysis. * Research, design, and implement custom motion control algorithms for motion control research and technology development. * Design/Develop control strategies and Command Control System computations, including real-time Command Control systems and hardware/software modifications to Command Control Systems. * Support research through control algorithm adaption, tuning and predictive modeling. * Program motion sensors and instrumentation for feedback to motion control algorithms. * Develop experimental control solutions and manage experimental integration into acceleration research device systems. * Provide work estimates for development of motion control and experiment integration effort to program managers and investigators. * Serve as operational support staff for complex acceleration research devices and systems. Qualify to hold position to operate or manage research support functions. * Contribute to scientific process as associate investigator, co-investigator and co-author for presentation and publication of results from completed research studies. What Sets You Apart: * Bachelor’s degree and 3 or more relevant years of work history or a Master’s degree with 1 or more years of relevant work history. * Proficiency in multiple programming systems including MATLAB, LabVIEW, Arduino IDE, Python, MS Office, and C creation and editing. * Time spent using embedded hardware and sensors (resolver, thermistor, current sensor...). * Worked with sensor calibrations and tuning for motor drives. * Experience in dynamometers, motor test equipment and motor and inverter test procedures * Familiarity with Git based code repositories and Git workflow. * Demonstrated understanding of the first principles to guide electro-mechanical system modeling * Work with state estimation methodologies using classical observers, Kalman Filter, etc. * Experience with motor control and firmware development * Designing controllers using Model Predictive Control, Optimal Control and Adaptive Control Theory * Demonstrated influence in selection of sensors, actuators, and electro-mechanical design * Demonstrated experience implementing controls in production systems * ROS systems and packages * Dynamic systems and control theory. * Experience motion control algorithms including Classical Washout, Adaptive Washout, and Optimal Control Methods. * Have or be able to obtain Secret U.S. Government Clearance to be hired. US Citizenship required . You might also have: * Time spent in a military or medical research environment is highly desired. * Human acceleration research experience highly desired. * Post-graduate internship, fellowship or doctoral candidate studies in electro-mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering or control systems engineering. * OEM operator training for acceleration research devices (ETC or Moog). * Development of test software and scripts on Linux/Windows environments. * Demonstrated experience with Altium Designer or similar circuit design tools. * Comfortable working around low voltage and high voltage systems * Working knowledge of MATLAB, VISIO, and LTSpice software packages Original Posting Date: 2024-05-28
