Job Description

Position title: Classroom Teacher

Position description: The classroom teacher exercises primary supervisory and instructional responsibility for students assigned to his/her classroom.

Position classification: Exempt (salaried employee)

Reports to Head of School

Qualifications:

  • Possess a minimum of an undergraduate degree from an accredited college or university with a state teacher certification (i.e. Early Childhood, Elementary, or Middle School) preferred. An Early Childhood certification is preferred for Grades K through 3, an Elementary certification is preferred for grades 4 and 5, and a Middle School certification is preferred for grades 6 through 8. For middle school teachers, certification in the subject area in which the teacher is expected to teach is preferred.
  • Demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with students, fellow teachers, parents, community members, administrators, and board members.

Duties and Responsibilities Under the direct supervision of the Head of School, Classroom Teachers will:

  • Report to Head of School for all matters relating to classroom instruction and oversight of students in his/her charge.
  • Report to Head of School for all matters relating to education, curriculum management, and classroom instruction.
  • Comply with the policies and procedures of Mason Preparatory School as outlined in the Board Policy Manual, Faculty Handbook, Student/Family Handbook and Employee Handbook, focusing on:
    • All matters pertaining to instruction and curriculum
    • Safety of children
      • Supervising the safe movement of students throughout the campus
      • Assisting as assigned and being prompt with morning and afternoon car duty.
      • Locking up and alarming the building if you are the last one to leave.
      • Promoting playground safety
    • Emergency management
      • Teaching emergency procedures to students
      • Participating in drills on emergency situations
  • Implement the school’s curriculum for assigned teaching areas to include the following specific items:
    • Meet the goals and objectives outlined in the school’s Curriculum Standards.
    • Meet or exceed the specific requirements of the school’s curriculum for each grade or course taught as outlined in the applicable Curriculum Guide(s).
    • Plan and present interesting, effective lessons which present required instructional material using multi-sensory approaches (i.e. kinesthetic, tactile, auditory, and visual).
    • Plan and present interesting, effective lessons which incorporate all levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy as appropriate for the grade level taught:
      • Knowledge (recall of procedure, facts, etc.)
      • Comprehension (understand or be able to explain)
      • Application (apply to a similar situation)
      • Analysis (breakdown into components, causes, etc.)
      • Synthesis (create)
      • Evaluation (judge with justification)
    • Apply all levels of Bloom’s Taxonomy to student activities in a variety of forums

(i.e. listening, written expression, oral expression, dramatization, and cooperative

learning/group activity, etc..).

    • Building on effective presentation techniques, provide adequate comprehension checks, reinforcement, and re-teaching as necessary to ensure that the subject content has been taught well enough for each student to respond successfully.
    • Schedule curriculum-related field trips that enhance and do not duplicate experiences provided at other levels within the school’s curriculum.
    • Coordinate or assist as assigned with enrichment activities (state level, i.e. SCISA, or local competitions and clinics, weekly enrichment classes, student clubs/activities, etc.).
    • Coordinate instruction with preparation for annual standardized testing.
    • Provide tutorial/remedial assistance for students as needed.
    • Participate in ongoing curriculum upgrades and identification of instructional aids as necessary to fully implement the curriculum.
  • Communicate effectively with school constituencies to include the following specific items:
    • Maintain high standards of verbal and written communication.
    • Maintain open, effective lines of communications with administrators, fellow teachers, parents, and students.
  • Administer discipline guidelines with fairness and consistency as outlined in the faculty and student handbooks.
  • Maintain at all times a professional appearance and demeanor.
  • Seek professional development opportunities to maintain currency in areas of expertise and enhance quality of instruction.

Hours of Employment:

  • Employee is expected to be at school during school operation from 7:30 am until 3:30 pm for full-time employees and as scheduled for part-time employees. On occasion, Employee may be required to attend scheduled school events outside of these hours.
