Job Title: Maintenance Apprentice

Department: General Maintenance

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor

FLSA: Non-Exempt

Summary: The Maintenance Apprentice will obtain experience and knowledge of Industrial Maintenance at a food manufacturing plant. Apprentice time will be split between dedicated training, various general labor tasks, and assisting the Maintenance Team with whatever tasks are required. Training involves theoretical review, hands on learnings with experienced maintenance technicians, trainer and trainee assessments, documentation of trainings, and periodic reviews. Most of the apprentice time will be spent under the guidance of an experienced Maintenance Technician who will be serving as a training lead technician, under the direction of the Maintenance Trainer. The apprentice will also have some dedicated time for training with PLC technicians, Electricians, HVAC technicians, Maintenance Planner, Maintenance Trainer, and Maintenance Managers. Upon conclusion of the program, the apprentice will not be a fully trained Industrial Maintenance Technician, rather, the apprentice will gain a general understanding and basic hands on experience in the most common tasks that an Industrial Maintenance Technician does at Martin’s.

Maintenance Apprentice Program Topics: Current estimated topics covered in the apprentice program that may or may not include hands on training: Industrial Safety and OSHA, Maintenance Principles and Recordkeeping, Maintenance Tools, Fasteners, Troubleshooting, Bearings and Lubrication, Shafts Couplings and Alignment, Belts and Pulleys, Chains and Sprockets, Gears and Gearboxes, Conveyors, Fundamentals of Electricity, Electrical Test and measurement equipment, Motors Generators and Alternators, Motor Controls, Industrial Wiring Diagrams, Sensors, VFDs, PLCs, HMIs, Heating and Refrigeration, HVAC Systems, Maintenance Welding, Cutting Procedure, Piping Systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

* Adheres to safety, food safety, and quality and Good Manufacturing Practices regulations including communication of potential concerns to maintenance leaders.

* Works effectively, efficiently and positively with team members.

* Maintains the cleanliness of maintenance shop and work areas.

* Communicates with supervisor or trainer regarding task assignment, task completion and deviation from task schedule.

* Works flexible hours to meet project/task deadlines. Much of the apprentice training requires the production lines to be down to service equipment, so the apprentice will need to work more Sundays and other down days in order to gain the experience needed.

* Maintains tools and machinery in good condition and uses all tools carefully and as instructed.

* Maintains and completes task schedule including written and verbal requests.

* Communicates suggestions, questions and concerns to supervisor or trainer.

* Works as directed by maintenance lead, maintenance trainer, or maintenance supervisor. The apprentice will spend time throughout the course of the program between: Training in the concepts of the Industrial Maintenance Apprentice Training Program, performing general labor tasks required of the maintenance department, other assignments as needed.

* General Labor. Completes general labor assignments of the maintenance department as directed, including but not limited to: inspection and cleaning of plant panel boxes, cleaning and organization of the maintenance shop and storage areas, rebuilding of maintenance parts and belting, organization and

movement of parts and equipment in storage trailers, hand loading baskets on the basket line so technicians can service the basket line during production, etc.

* Training preparation. An essential part of the apprentice training is reading and retaining information in manuals, training guides, online information, etc. to understand concepts. The apprentice will be expected to read materials assigned as homework up to 5 hours per week.

* Training discussion of concept. The apprentice will be expected to discuss topics assigned by Maintenance Lead or Maintenance Trainer for comprehension of concept prior to most planned hands on trainings.

* Training review. The apprentice will be expected to complete reviews of hands on trainings including such information as the description of work performed, time spent, comprehension rating of concept, suggestions for improvements, additional training suggestions, etc.

* Maintain training record book throughout apprenticeship.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This job has no supervisory responsibilities.

Education and/or Experience:

* High School Diploma or GED;

* Some Industrial Maintenance training preferred.

* Some Industrial Maintenance experience preferred.

* Candidate must have 2-5 years mechanical training or maintenance experience.

Language Skills:

Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:

Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk or hear and smell. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision and depth perception. Performs tasks at varying heights.

Working Environment:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts; fumes or airborne particles.

The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places; toxic or caustic chemicals; outside weather conditions; risk of electrical shock and vibration. The temperature in the production area may be affected by outside temperatures. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
