The Director of Clinical Operations is responsible for the overall direction of hospice clinical services and operations related to clinical practice. He/she is responsible for the employment of qualified hospice personnel; is responsible for the provision of hospice services, directly, and the delegation to and coordination of clinical personnel evaluations. The Director of Clinical Operations establishes, implements and evaluates goals and objectives for hospice services that meet and promote the standards of quality and that comply with federal and state regulations and guidelines and that contribute to the total organization and philosophy.

Director of Clinical Operations Responsibilities:
  • Coordinates and oversees all direct and indirect patient services provided by clinical organization personnel.
  • Provides guidance and counseling to all program coordinators and Team Directors to assist them in continually improving all aspects of hospice care services, provided through organization personnel.
  • Assists the Executive Director in the preparation and administration of the organization's budget.
  • Interprets operational indicators to detect census changes and increases or decreases in volume that could impact staffing levels, revenues or expenses. Is responsible for managing controllable clinical costs including, but not limited to staffing, supplies, equipment, medications, mileage and overtime use.
  • Hires, evaluates, and terminates organization personnel.
  • Oversees the maintenance of patient clinical records, statistics, reports and records for purposes of evaluation and reporting of organization activities.
  • Assures proper maintenance of clinical records in compliance with local, state and federal laws.
  • Communicates with nurse liaisons, referral sources, and potential clients upon their request and in a timely fashion.
  • Collaborates with business development team to deliver education and customer service to external vendors.
  • Ensures organizational compliance with legal, regulatory and accreditation requirements. Assures compliance with all local, state and federal laws regarding licensure and certification of organization personnel. Is responsible for managing any site or off-site survey from outside agencies.
Director of Clinical Operations Requirements:
  • Registered nurse in the State with current licensure to practice professional nursing in the State, CHPN preferred or required within one year of employment.
  • Associate or Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited program by the National League for Nursing. Master's degree in healthcare or business preferred.
  • Three years of management experience in a hospice or related health care organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and direct professional and administrative personnel.
  • Ability to market and deal tactfully with customers and the community.
  • Has excellent observation, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of business management, governmental regulations and Joint Commission standards.
  • Currently CPR certified or willing to become certified.
  • Understands hospice care and the services provided to patient and family/caregiver through an interdisciplinary group.
