Summary

JUVENILE DIVERSION OFFICER
“Diversion is a cost effective method of dealing with first time juvenile offenders by eliminating formal court proceedings while holding the juveniles accountable for their violations of law, providing rehabilitative direction and protecting the interests of the community.

THE POSITION: Under the direct supervision of the department manager, this position performs a variety of professional duties associated with managing a caseload of offenders who have admitted to having committed a crime, but have agreed to participate in a voluntary, pre-adjudicated Diversion program administered under the authority and discretion of the Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Provides ongoing supervision of each case. Responsible to create and enforce a case management plan utilizing the Balanced and Restorative Justice approaches while monitoring for community safety, accountability, and competency development. Holds offenders accountable while monitoring for compliance and assigning appropriate interventions and sanctions as needed. This position entails occasionally working in an environment and with individuals that could pose a potential personal danger and risk to the employee’s safety. Hours of work are generally Monday through Friday with some evenings. Candidates must be able to meet POST requirements and obtain POST certification within the first 12 months of employment.
  • $26.45 to $31.42 per hour depending on experience

WE ARE INTERESTED IN CANDIDATES WHO:
  • Are able to exercise good judgment, flexibility, creativity and sensitivity in response to changing situations and needs
  • Have a general knowledge of, or interest in, the principles and practices:
  • Of the Criminal Justice System in general, and the Juvenile Justice System in particular
  • Of Kootenai County’s policies and operating procedures
  • Of County principles and practices of workplace safety
  • Are able to plan, organize, supervise and evaluate the progress of assigned duties and cases
  • Maintain a calm demeanor and have self-control in difficult situations (such as working with irate or hostile adults or juveniles)
DO YOU QUALIFY?
  • Do you have a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in social or behavioral sciences, Criminal Justice, or related field; AND at least 2 years of progressively responsible related experiences; or equivalent combination of education and/or experience?
  • Do you possess or have the ability to obtain POST certification within the first 12 months of employment?
  • Do you possess or have the ability to possess a First Aid card and CPR Certification?
  • Are you able to pass a law enforcement criminal check, fingerprinting and credit check?
  • Do you possess or have the ability to possess a driver’s license and be insurable?
